Choices for Antiemetics in Prepartum Patients

I am looking for some input regarding medications to treat prepartum patients with nausea and vomiting. I am particularly interested in hearing about using Vistaril.

I appreciate the responses so far, but I want to clarify a bit further.......I am referring to the high-risk, pre-term patients in the emergency setting.

Zofran is ideal for hyperemesis... although it is a bit expen$$$$ive

Antivert can also be used for hyperemesis or morning sickness (know this from personal experience)... a lot cheaper, but doesn't work as well as the Zofran.

Some physicians recommend the OTC product Unisom SleepTabs® (contains doxylamine succinate, which was the main ingredient in the morning sickness medication Bendectin, before it was removed from the market).

Have never heard of vistaril being used to treat morning sickness.

Before using ANY medication (OTC, prescription, or herbs) while pregnant, you need to talk with your doctor or nurse midwife!

ZOFRAN!!! Without a doubt, the best choice (IMHO). I am in the middle of my 3rd Zofran pregnancy. Severe hyperemesis x3 since 1998 has afforded me the opportunity to try virtually every medication available to treat NVP. The report of many women, myself included, is that it does not necessarily stop the nausea, but it does decrease the likelihood to vomit. (Which is "as good as it gets" for me, also.)

I finally got my PICC line removed on May 17th when I got an Rx for the ODT (orally dissolving tablet) formulation of Zofran. The oral tabs had zero effect on me, and I couldn't get off the IV formulation until something oral could substantially control my NVP. The ODT's taste horrid (IMHO), and are ridiculously expensive ($34.00 per tab x Q8H) but oh-so-worth it.....

I feel your pain! Had two hyperemesis pregnancies myself and can think of no experience as bad as throwing up/ dry heaves all of the time. But now I have two beautiful children, which makes it all worthwhile. :)
