Change of Path

Before I ever thought about being an Registered Nurse I had the dream that I would be an MD. I really did think that this was what I wanted so I took Chemistry and Bio AP in High School, I attended the National Youth Leadership forum on Medicine in D.C. where I got the chance to go to the NIH and discuss issues in medicine with the surgeon general richard carmona and the director of the NIH. It was awe inspiring but I felt intimidated.

In my senior year of HS i became a CNA at a local hospital and the idea of nursing intrigued me but after 3 years of being a CNA I have changed my mind. Why? Because I am tired of the attitude and disrespect in the nursing community. I am tired of being referred to as a subordinate, a maid/butler, etc. i feel that no matter how much knowledge a nurse attains the stigma wills till remain.

I have choosen to follow my dream so I have left nursing school and am now enrolled in a pre-medical program and hopefully I will be an MD in a few years.

Just because I have choosen to leave the nursing field, does not mean I do not respect and value fellow CNA's, LPN's and RN's. You guys really are the unsung heroes of the health care industry but I feel it is no longer a place for me.
