Career Change from IT to nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

hi all,

i am seriously considering a career change to the nursing field from it. nursing has been something i have always wanted to do and i wanted to see if anyone here recently made a career change to nursing. as you probably know it jobs are in the dumps and all studies indicate that it will only continue. i am considering applying for the lpn program at a local community college (pikepeakcommunity college) unfortunately i am unable to devote the 2 years to becoming a rn (hopefully in the future) lpn is only 1 year. any information or feedback would be appreciated.

thanks

Specializes in SRNA.

Hi,

I'm doing the same thing. I'm currently in a 1 year accelerated BSN program, so you can become an RN in one year. if you already have a degree in something else. Let me know if you have any questions.

I went from nursing (5 years) to IT (8 years-QA and software development) and then back to nursing :) . Same reasons you are considering it now, computer jobs are hard to find lately. Go for it!

Your job outsourced? Don't want to move to India? Come on down!!!!!

Have we got a job for you! You'll find nursing a refreshing change....and you are really needed. Maybe you can come up with some better computer stuff than what we currently have.

Not to disillusion you, but you will work hard as a nurse, the hours are long, and the pay.....well so-so. But every day I learn something new from a patient or family member or (every so often) physician ;)

There are many different types of nursing and I encourage you to spend a little time checking things out....go shadow a nurse somewhere for a few hours. Cruise up to the local nursing school and sit in on a class. Go volunteer at a hospital for a few months (good for the soul, too).

Now let me put in a plug....join the Navy Nurse Corps....see the world, especially Iraq. Nurses get more respect when they carry 9 MM Berettas.

Specializes in ICU, CM, Geriatrics, Management.

Mtn -- Another displaced worker here (utility industry).

Just finished the two prereq's required. Start the nursing program in September.

Welcome and good luck!
