What is stopping any one of you from geting into that field if you despise it so much? Go ahead and become a CEO, take the classes and the training and do the work and offer to work for 50-60K a year...see how long you would last.

I had the unfortunate experience of working for an HCA hospital for a while when they bought out a facility that I was working for and I tell you it was all about$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I would retire before I would work for another for profit hospital. The United States is the only country in the world where it is acceptable to make a profit off the backs of sick people. There is a special place in hell for those CEO's of HCA.

Wah, Wah, Wah...don't care what they do all day. I do know that whatever it is they do, it sure ain't worth millions of dollars a year.
If I had to guess, I'd wager that their day goes something like this....sit on their overpaid butt for most of the morning, maybe hook up with their mistress at lunch, figure out how to bleed everyone else dry, play a couple rounds of golf. Maybe make a show of being interested in what the peons are doing-ie walk onto a few floors here and there and pretend to talk with the staff but most of the time, the staff chosen to talk with said CEO are yes men/women for the NM.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

I respect myself too much to sell my soul to the almighty dollar. The CEOs can make a decent wage but why on earth should someone get millions a year to be a glorified office worker? Please.

And that is THE reason there should be no profit in healthcare. I was briefly a DON in LTC. That's when I learned that department managers got a kickback based on $$$ their department saved. So my guess is the CEO and his cutbacks are the reason for his salary.

Interesting....

If you hate the CEO for earning so much and believe (mistakenly, BTW) that they do nothing more than sit on their butts, go golfing and have inappropriate interludes at lunch....then shadow one. Find out what they really do. Go to school and become one. NOW *you* know what RNs do...and can make a difference and earn more income (which - at that point - you will definitely feel you *deserve*!).

My husband's father said to him, "A doctor is not paid for his time, he is paid for what he knows." It is a CEO's knowledge that gets him that check. Most of us could not do his (or her) job.

It appears that many are angry about what they *think* is happening or why.

One thing I would point out....

In a communistic country, all citizens were paid the same regardless of education or level of effort. (Spread the wealth. No upper/lower class.) Well the productivity in those countries tanked. The guy working his behind off got ticked when the guy who sat on his arse did nothing and got the same check. As a result, he stopped working as hard. Why would you go through to get an MD or PhD when you would get the same pay as a janitor?

Then there is France. Oh they hate the *US*. We are a bunch of greedy selfish folks. Did you see them scream bloody murder when the Pres wanted to INCREASE their work week to 40 hrs (currently 30) and shorten their annual vacation time to 2 weeks (from 3 months)! We have what we have because of our own efforts. If you want more, seek more. If you do not seek more then it is time to have your lips greet each other.

Regarding the pens.....

Think of it this way.....

How many times did you "steal" pens from your employer? How many times did you get home, clean out your uniform pockets and there was a pen there that wasn't there when you got to work? You then left that one at home.... (rinse, repeat). How many times did you steal from your employer when you printed personal stuff using the hospital computer and/or printer? Have you ever used your employers copier or fax for personal reasons?

Sounds petty? Yeah, but if you add it up, it can cost a fortune in the long run. Think about it, if every employee came to work without a pen and left with one, how much would that cost the hospital per year?

That is the way a business person thinks.

I only began to think about this kind of stuff when I was at church one Sunday. I lived in a military town and I was AD USAF. The pastor asked us to raise our hands if we ever have stolen from our employers. Of course no hands went up. Then he said, "Raise your hands if you have 'Skilcraft' pens at home." The looks on the faces were priceless! I was raised military. I remember all those Skilcraft pens. I had never thought of it as stealing. He pointed out that the Lord would. Wow! I never took home another Skilcraft pen!

Oh puhlease. Get real. Statements like yours from nurses themselves are a big part of the reason they will never be taken seriously by management.

The CEO's make tons of money and that "heavy" burden is tolerated just fine - LOL!

Meanwhile, the nurse has 10 patients, and can't get a freaking pen or decent supplies.

I am sorry, I don't care how hard a hospitals CEOs job is; they are not worth $1,400,000...the president of the United State does not make that much and he runs and entire country.

Just interested in what FLmomof5 thinks about what is going on at my facility. Kind of hard to defend the admin. at my hospital. Very hard indeed.

To follow, I would like you FLmomof5 to do just what you are asking the nurses here to do. You seem.............(ahem, cough) more educated on the admin.'s roles than the rest of us, so..........fill us in. What makes what they do such an impossible task that only a select few can do it? Go ahead........educate me. Give me a few concrete job duties that ONLY THEY can perform. Hmmm..........something tells me your lips are meeting each other right now.

I'm a firm believer that most hospitals today find themselves in the situations they are in because overpaying admin. has gone on too long. Take UPMC for example. They performed a death march, firing admin. left and right. Basically told them they did not fill any role or perform any function for the facility and thus were being let go. Over 600 people were let go, not a single one was a nurse. When I was a travel nurse in WA, two very big hospital systems had done the exact same thing. They cut administration, firing almost 200 people, again not a single one of those firings being a nurse.

Seems to me, when times are rough and a facility must "watch the budget", the first thing to go is administration. This would not be the case if they were the.......unique talents that you paint them as.
