A few threads latley have had tittles that got me all excited to read the juicy "gossip", only to be very disappointed or think the OP was a little on the the nutty side. So I thought we could share our juicy "I can't believe the nurse did...."? I can think of one time responding to a code white in mental health, where the pts nurse was egging him on "oh, your going to kill me, well I'd like you to try. Come on, let's have it. You wanted a problem, well now you have one" and other very unhelpful things. I can see why the pt got so angry. Someone had to make leave. Can't believe she works in mental health.

A 5 foot 4 inch RN female who always headed straight for active family altercations while my 6 foot 4 inch self went into the ER Office for a Security or Deputy call,...

I don't make enough to go "Chuck Norris."

Plus ,...I was always too chicken- not her, like a fly to poop she went with all 98lbs of "Stop that Now!!"

She once told me, "I'm not bad, but the bad don't mess with me." I believed her:)

I had to add this, and warning- it's gross!!

This very small hospital I got a travel assignment to had this incredibly small bathroom that connected directly to the nursing station. This nurse on day shift posted a sign that said "Please Do Not Wipe Boogers on Wall!" (Who often verbally announced we might want to stay clear of the desk awhile- though there were bathrooms in every vacant room, and a vacant floor above us). I mean really, a doctor once said,"whom ever is in there, could we get a courtesy flush?" I wish I was joking,...she wasn't even embarrassed:(

anyway, the sign,...

I was embarrassed for them!!! The next shift (right after finding out she was the one who posted it), I walked in the Nursing Lounge (you guessed it), to see her digging hard in her nose, them her finger went under table.

I really quietly backed out of room, and never told a soul except you guys!! I thought that was soooo weird.

Another unrelated story, I was pulled to a Psych Unit where my only colleague was this VERY friendly young female nurse. I was 20, and finishing up my 1st year of Nursing. I caught her smelling my lab coat (was over my chair). Now I'm not talking about a "sniff," but a full blown face covering, bilateral gripped smelling of MY coat!!! I felt soooo violated!!!! I called my wife(well ex-wife now:)), and she said,...

"That's normal!, your such a freak! Some women smell clothes like that."

I know Gain Fabric Softener smells good, but c'mon!!! I walked on egg shells all night long!!!!:)

A new nurse when I worked in LTC was being stalked by this sweet ( all be it slightly annoying) demented lady. She would follow in her wheel chair saying " miiissss... Ohhhh miiiissss" so this nurse turns around and says " please get this troll away from me". I was horrified. Last I checked she was working at the mall somewhere.

"No day but today"

I have been sitting here, for a few moments, scanning my memory for "i can't believe a nurse did that" stories,

and shockingly,

after over 3 decades of nursing,

all over the nation, in every kind of unit you can name,

i have very very few of them.

is kind of amazing, really, isn't it?

OH, i can recall a few inappropriate remarks here or there,

or a few poor decisions,

but, i can't come up with a lot "unbelievable" types of stories, or, at least, i can't yet....

A few that came to mind, was a coworker addicted to drugs stealing the drugs at work, but, that one is kinda sad, really,

and one where a mentally ill coworker had secretly taken the code cart into an empty room to hook her own self up to the monitor to see her own heart rhythm, she was always doing odd things, but, moving the code cart to a hidden area, without telling anyone seemed off the hook to us.

lol, i'll have to keep thinking!! surely, i'd have more than those 2 stories....i'll have to think some more on this.

is probably one f the most unbelievable moments i've ever seen in nursing, ha ha, and it was ME! :laugh: I do think, the iv pole may have been moved even an inch, too, by the crowd around that bed in the flurry of the code, which helped cause that whole nightmare.

^ definitely that's one for the books, eh? Happened over 20 years ago, it is still a stunning story, imo.

To the OP, yeah, i know what you meant about titles of posts,

not always matching up well to the actual content of the post.:roflmao:

Had a VERY needy family. They came looking for me every five minutes to ask "Is that IV pump running?" (yes.) "Is it normal to have pink in the heplock?" (yes.) "Can you just come look at this freckle? Is that normal?" (it's fine.)

I ended up screening the calls to the MD on the unit, bringing him 10% of what they were asking for. For example "Can you ask the doctor to come in? I want to ask about this freckle." Finally, the pt had an actual reaction to a med he'd never had before and I went to ask the MD for a benadryl order.

The MD got in my face and told me to stop bugging him for that patient and do whatever the hell I want for them. So I got the order for benadryl, stopped being nice, and pointed out the MD for each and every request they had so they could ask him directly themselves. 100% of the time.

I got an apology later that night.

We were having the rounds from hell, everyone was behind on scheduled treatments, and patients were ringing off the hook to get prns and bathroom assistance.

This patient had his call bell on for 5 minutes or so. She runs by him. He calls out to her, 'Miss, I really need to use the bathroom!'. She stops, looks at him, points at his urinal. He says 'But Miss, I have to have a BM, and its urgent!'

Her answer? 'Well we are all busy right now. Just **** in your bed, the CNA will clean you up after.'

I kid you not. Said CNA was standing close enough to hear this disgusting statement and reported her to the charge.

That coorifice language was inexcusable. But, I have to admit, I've told residents to just go in the bed when we don't have time to get them up. If youre a stand by assist, okay sure. If you're a 20 minute mechanical lift operation, nope, dont always have time. Sorry, when I'm busy with a med pass and my aide is busy with a shower, no one is going to get you up in the Hoyer and put you on the toilet. It's not that outrageous to tell a pt this
