Becoming a diabetic educator

  1. Help! I graduated in December 1998 with my BSN. I am really interested in becoming a diabetic educator. However, I have no idea where to start. I am currently a staff nurse on a med-surg unit. Any advice & info you could give me would be great. Thanks!

Log onto the American Diabetes Association website (www.diabetes.org)--There is some info here. There is a diabetes education certification review textbook that one needs to study (pretty thick) and a certification test (which allows one to be certified for five years, I believe).

Oops! Wrong internet address! Go to http://www.aadenet.org THEN go to NCBE. They have some strict requirements--1000 hours prior experience with educating diabetic clients. You can also e-mail them at info@ncbde.org.
