Hi All,

I am taking a family health care/transcultural nursing class on line. My class requires me to immerse myself in an ethnic community and them take those experiences and do a powerpoint presentation on line. I chose the Vietnamese community to focus on. One of the immersion experiences that I must have is to interview a caretaker of Vietnamese peoples. It can be an MD or a nurse. I have tried setting up appointments at a local community health center to talk to someone and so far I have not received any phone calls back. I know how busy it can be in the healtcare industry so I do not like to push.

I am hoping someone on line can help me out with a few questions.

1. How is the best way to care for someone in the Vietnamese community?

2. What would a nurse have to do to take culturally competent care of this community?

3. What diseases are prevalent in this community?

4. Any other information would be appreciated also.

Thank you

Guide to Culturally Competent Health Care by Purnell & Paulanka is a great reference for the types of questions you are asking and also gives you a good reference instead of saying "got this from allnurse forum readers."

I know buying another book may not be an option, but maybe your college/local library might have a copy!

Good luck on the assignment!

You may want to consider contacting a temple or church servicing primarily a Vietnamese population, they may have a practitioner you can speak with. Or, if you know of an area with a strong Vietnamese population, I'd contact some homecare agencies. They frequently deal with many types of communities and maybe able to better assist you than a clinic.
