Be careful what you ask for. You might get it! We have a huge union movement in Canada. Most hospitals are unionized. We have ONA in Ontario. We pay big union dues but the gov't legislated that we are a necessary service and caanot strike.

the union spreads its mentality throughout the membership. All nurse are the same.Because of that it keeps things like clinical laddering out. There is no incentive to work on degrees or certification because senority is the bottom line. Most American nurses get tuition payback. We have a hard time getting the day off to attend class. Many of us feel, in Ontario that our union sold us down the river on our last contract. They don't seem to listen to the membership. Some of the hospitals in Ontario that are not unionized have more incentives for the nurses than the ONA hospitals.

If you are considering a union, insist on contract language agreeing with FMLA and ADA. I have been dealing with union workers with contract language contradicting ADA and FMLA. The courts have been ruling on the side of the contract not the ADA or FMLA violation.

I have been a unionized nurse in NJ for over 15 years our union JNESO which is part of the IUOE has done a wonderful job for us. Not only do we have contract language that protects us but helps us protect our patients by not allowing uncross trained nurses to float to areas. Our union is a Health Care Union Run by nurses.

Nurses must realize that the union is only as strong as the nurses make it. THEY ARE THE UNION.

Right now union drives our happeneing all over this country because nurses are sick and tired of going home feeling unrewarded for the hard work they are doing.

They are tired of mandatory over time the are tired of unsafe staffing levels.

I have started a web site and email list for nurses interested in learning more about unionizing . We are atarting mentors which we be nurses from all over the country belonging to specific unions to help answer nurses questions relivant to where they live. http://www.uniontalk4nurses.org

IT is time nurses speak up and demand to be treated like the professionals we are. WIth one voice we can accomplish so much.

Remember United We Bargin Divided We Beg!
