From what i seen on 60 minutes the other night, I wouldn't want to work for that company. How can you just let a doctor go around giving coronary bypasses to people who didn't need them and ignore all the letters and complaints about the guy?!!! I would be ashamed to work for that place!

Tenet is a hardcore, for-profit, bottom-line oriented company . . . hey wait . . . that is what most companies, well, all companies in America are like!!! It is capitalism, free-market economics, what do you expect in a capitalistic society like the United States?

Do you think healthcare is a right that is free to all humans and that the people who work in hospitals will care for these folks out of the goodness of their hearts??

Nearly all other industries do the same thing. They look for ways to make more money and decrease the costs of doing business.

Am I defending Tenet? Absolutely not!! I would go in with the assumption that any business (and a hospital is a business) is going to be bottom-line oriented. Look for things that you desire in your job, if you like it, then go for it, if you don't, then don't. There are good and bad out there, each hospital is different because each is made up of hundreds of people, they are not clones or all under the "Tenet spell." They do not go to "Tenet" school to learn how to be nasty to their employees. There are good people and bad people that work in any for-profit buisness, including a hospital. If you like the people and the culture of the place, then go to work for them!!

Why are nurses so niave about this kind of thing, like it is insulting that a business is bottom-line oriented? I don't like it any more than you guys do, but get over it, it is reality. Find a way to thrive within the system. Sitting around complaining about it will do absolutely nothing to change it. Learn about the system, learn about the people running it, learn the rules all but nurses seem to be playing by, learn how to communicate effectively to get what you want changed.

Premier is another company that I have found to have an "anti-nurse" concept although they may toot otherwise.

Anyone work for Premier?

Name some companies that operate hospitals that are a plus for nurses to work for because I certainly plan on avoiding becoming an employee where nurses are continuously overlooked and abused.

I'm appreciating the input everyone. Keep it going. I'm sure it's helping out a lot of nurses, not just me. :)

I beg to differ, so please hear me out. A business that is built on the Golden Rule, and so treats its employees (Chick-Filet is a prime example), cannot help but prosper. It's the economically smart thing to do. We do reap what we sow, whether individually or corporately.

They have a bad rep in the Philly area, too.

I think there is a BIG difference between business and illegal fraud. The product of inpatient hospitals is NURSING! If Tenet or ano other company refuses to provide the service they charge for they need to go. Just one nurses opinion.

Tenet talking finance while nurses concern is their patients. Here the patients are newborn babies. I doubt this spokesman for the company knows about neonatal intensive care.

Tenet Says S.E.C. Upgrading Inquiry Into Its Finances

By ANDREW POLLACK

LOS ANGELES, July 9-Tenet Healthcare said today that it was being formally investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, adding to a growing list of investigations and lawsuits the company is facing. ..(paragraphs deleted)

Tenet also continues to face labor problems.

Today, several nurses at its Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, Calif., held a news conference outside the hospital gates to complain that the nursery and the neonatal intensive-care unit were understaffed, in violation of state regulations.

"It's potentially dangerous for you to deliver a child here," said Sara Davenport, a nurse in the neonatal care unit. She and other nurses said they had complained to the hospital's management, to no avail. The nurses said the situation has been like that for about two years and has not worsened noticeably in the last few months as Tenet's earnings have deteriorated.

The news conference was organized by the California Nurses Association, which is trying to unionize the nurses at Centinela and other Tenet hospitals in the state. Tenet, in hopes of achieving labor peace, reached an agreement in May with two other unions to represent workers in its hospitals. But the nurses association opposes that agreement and wants to represent the nurses.

Harry Anderson, a spokesman for Tenet, denied that staffing was inadequate, saying the charge was part of the union's effort to use "every means at hand in an effort to advance their organizing effort in a very competitive environment."

The product of hospitals is healthcare, nursing is one part of this. However, the only reason for an inpatient hospitalization is the need for nursing care.

Spacenurse, excellent post illustrating the HUGE difference in turning a profit (which all like to do) AND BILKING MONEY ILLEGALLY. I don't see any naive nurses here, frankly, passing-thru. Renee's question was legit and from what I am reading here, I would NOT work in Tenet hospitals, either, unless there WERE no other places to work. Spacenurse, Your post was very timely. A good reminder. Thank you.

Equation for success:

happy/satisfied employees = satisfied/loyal customers = success

Chick-Fil-A (however you spell it, sorry) leadership understands this. I have read about this company and how well they treat their employees. They should be a model for all to follow.

Wonder why the hospital administration geeks can't figure this out. When I talk to some of my colleagues about this they look at me like I am crazy.

What's it like to work for hospitals operated and owned by Tenet?

Anyone ever work at St. Louis University Hospital which is owned by Tenet?

What's it like?

I'm looking at several hospitals to work at next Spring, and St. Louis University is one of them.

Anyone graduate from St. Louis University's RN to BSN program (providing they have one)? Care to share?

Thanks for your responses! :)

When I worked there as an orderly back in 97, the major share holder and might-as-well-be owner was none other than Ross Perot. Go figure...
