Any underweight nurses?

Nurses General Nursing

I didn't want to hijack the other thread about weight (any overweight nurses...) but I have a few concerns regarding my weight and nursing, and I'm on the other end of the spectrum.

Does being underweight and short affect your ability to perform some nursing duties? I've been petite my entire life and I get comments from many people that I must be anorexic, etc. so I'm worried about being judged.

I know some people mention lifting as a nurse... The hospital I am volunteering at though doesn't require nurses to lift anyone or anything that the nurse judges as too heavy. They call in special lift teams. But are you required to lift a lot of stuff at other hospitals? I don't think I'm weak, just because I'm thin, but I doubt I have the strength that someone who weighs more than me does.

Anyway, I just was worried about the issues I might run into. I fully expect to not be able to find work uniforms and scrubs that fit properly :uhoh3:

I remember two nurses my mom had when she was really sick (my mom is a bit overweight). One was a big nurse and she basically uses brute strength to lift her. The other is a real skinny nurse, absolutely no muscle whatsoever and to this day I still remember the first time I saw her lifted my mom like a piece of feather - pure techniques!

Exercise is not a hot topic in America, but if you strength train you will be better off. You can be small and strong...

I'm starting an adult gymnastics class soon. The first hour is focused on muscle training, the second on stretching, and the third on flips and stuff. Hopefully that'll help me out when it comes to strength.

I was 92lbs and 66 inches tall, until 5 years ago (and alot of prednisone).

Lifting was not a problem.

I did bruise easily, and tended to dehydrate/catch ill easily.

I wil never be accused of being underweight-lol,but have known many skinny minny nurses (young and older alike)that were more than capable of all the requirements to be a spectacular nurse. :)
