Any anyone used Topamax for weight loss?

by Shelleygrl32 Premium Member

Hi everyone. Just had a quick question, I recently started taking Topamax 100mg qd for my seizure disorder. I was reading up on it and found it was also good for weight loss. After I did my happy dance, I called my neuro and she did indeed say it would help. Has anyone here taken it for any reason and noticed any significant weight loss or know of any one who has? Thanks!

Not topamax but tegretol made me lose weight. I took it for myelopathy.

I use Topamax for my mood swings. I have lost weight, but I've also improved my eating, too. However, when I was on other meds for my moods, like Depakote (ie: "depabloat") I still gained weight despite dieting. So I suppose it may have helped in that regard. In any case, I have not *gained* any weight on it, unlike depakote, neurontin, zyprexa, remeron or lithium (I know, they are all different class meds, but just examples of meds I have taken for my mood disorder that have caused weight gain).

There were several segments on GMA, Today, etc. that discussed this. Pts. were taking Topamax for migraine mgmt. in the cases mentioned.

Two nurses I work with are taking it, along with Phentermine, for weight loss.

I take Topamax for mood swings since I'm diagnosed with cyclothymia. I was on depakote for over a year and had a slight increase in weight gain. Once I was switched to Topamax I lost the weight and I am able to stay at this weight, which is the weight I was in high school! I excercise and eat healthy, but I was doing that on depakote and was still having problems maintaning my weight.

I took Topamax for migraine control and lost 10 pounds in a few months...mainly because it makes all carbonated beverages taste nasty and you can't drink sodas,LOL

Did it help your migraines?

Thanks for the replies. Man, you aren't kidding about the nasty tasting sodas either. The first time I drank a Diet Coke, I thought it went flat. I went through three stupid cans before I remembered that fun little side effect. Duh!
