allnurses mentioned in AJN and it ain't flattering

Nurses General Nursing

There was a mention of the lethal injection discussion in AJN. It was kind of an embarrassment; they discussed a posting where a few individuals expressed a great desire to take part in lethal injections. Too bad.

ADMIN NOTE: Here is the link to the AJN article for those of you interested in reading it:

Hmmm....do you have a link for the article?

No, I read it in the paper copy. It was an article about medical professionals taking part in executions. They discussed how it conflicts with the code of ethics for nurses and doctors.

I will check my AJN----I am behind on my journal-reading, I have 2 months of AJN's to read thru yet......anyhow, was it the current one??????

That WOULD be hard for me to read.

A great reminder to myself to police my posts VERY carefully; I really do never know *who* is reading my words. And they MAY come back to haunt me.

I will go try and find that article.

Ohh good grief, they took it WAY out of context IF they chose to use it to make a point. It is obvious NONE of the nurses there are FOR administering lethal injections, and yes, a few "off color" jokes were told. but the thread was closed very promptly (and it appears, appropriately, by the moderator). I can't see why they took this ONE thread and built an ARTICLE on that????

So there are some nurses who believe in the death penalty. Well duh.....

I think there are a great number of people who favor the death penalty and would willing partake in executions especially people like Timothy McVeigh or child molestor/murderers. What's so unflattering about that? Personally as a nurse, I wouldn't work in a jail as it's not my thing. But if I were working in a jail and they needed a nurse to help put someone like that death with lethal in injection, I certainly would think about it, if I were not against the death penalty.

Interesting-did you report this to Brian? I wonder if it is legal for them to reproduce threads from this forum.Could someone scan the article for us?..Aside from that-I would not say anything here that I would not say in RT and I have the courage to stand by my convictions. Why was it an "embarrassment"? Many nurses and physicians also feel the same way.Did the AJN make a stand against nurses participating in lethal injection?.I understand that nurses, techs, etc only place the catheter and the meds are administered through a pump that anyone can trigger-isn't that correct or have I seen too many movies? We often discuss things that are not exactly "in keeping" with what some people still insist is the image of a nurse....So what? We can only be the BEST that we can be......people will think what they will and their opinions are based on their own experiences. How many times have you come up against a very difficult patient or family member that just "hated" nurses and doctors? There is nothing we can do to change someone's perception in a case like that.People that read the AJN and think "it's a shame" that some nurses might be pro death penalty and willing to assist with that are not the kind of people that really understand or care that people are entitled to their own opinions...They are very judgemental people,IMHO

I dont get the AJN, can someone please scan and post the article so that I can read it?

kind of makes you loose respect for AJN huh?

I saw it in my AJN. Taken TOTALLY OUT OF CONTEXT. This angers me greatly. I plan to write a letter expressing my disappointment. Funny thing is, I am up for renewal. I plan to cancel it, if I don't see some satisfaction when I write. The off-the-cuff remarks used there were taken completely out of context, used to make nurses seem callous regarding this issue.

For those that wonder, It's in the March, 2005 issue. I won't quote the article for copyright reasons, but the aforementioned thread IS the one mentioned in a context that served the author's desire to make a point, wrongly, I believe. I am not happy.
