Adult septic work up precursors.

  1. The Neonatal board was recently disscussing reasons we do septic work ups on neonates.
It's been awhile, but I seem to remember to a blood cultures x 2 and urine C&S on ANYONE that had a temp >100.5 regardless of being asymptomatic, in for syncopy, what ever. That was a real PITA. Is that still the norm?

Not necessarily. There is alot more that comes into play. And a temp of 101 would be more likely. History, signs and symptoms. Lots of things to think about.

I wonder if everybody construes blood cultures x2 the way we did.

Aerobic and Anaerobic (that's 2 bottles) from a site and then 10 minutes later Aerobic and Anaerobic (2 more bottles) from a different site.

And we had one doctor who would order urinalysis and hold for c&s for 2+ bacteria on U/A.

    It was 101.5 for us.

I have to laugh! We still do it! Hospital protocol for any temp greater than 101.5 of unknown source. Sometimes, and usually sputum cultures too! If they're on a Foley the c&s is a given.
