Accelerated Nursing Programs for Non-Nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey! I am finishing up my BS in Biology and am struggling with job options. I have always thought I was going to go to med school but "life" has happened and I don't know if I want to spend 4+ years away. So here I am, looking into an accelerated nursing (BSN) program! I don't want to spend too much time away, but living in IA, I am struggling to find one that isn't hours away. Do you know of any online options that are respectable?

Or any other ideas for me? I am new to the thought of becoming a nurse and I just don't know all of my options quite yet.

Thanks!

you can't do a nursing program online, you have to go to a variety of clinical sites and settings to work with live patients. Find a program that's a reasonable commute, know the sites they use and see if you can expect to get accepted.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

Nursing programs are never ALL online. Clinicals & practicums are required hands-on experiences.

Specializes in GENERAL.

Extra Pickles: If you don't want to spend endless hours "walking the beans" a good place to start that keeps you in the informational driver's seat is (collegescorecard.ed.gov).

Some on this allnurses site may find my next suggestions sacreligious but you may also want to look into PA programs or Physical Therapy since you have already shown your mettle by getting a B.S. in what is considered a hard science.

Any program should be a good fit and help you further advance your proven schlorship and potential marketability. But you have to evaluate them wisely.

Caveat: Forget the for-profit loan mills such as South University or University of Phoenix among others. Those schools are the last resort for the desperate, not someone who shows promise like you obviously do. Good luck. I hope this helps in some small way.

*And by the way, be wary, lots of deceptive snake-oil hucksters in higher ed these days. Make them put their promises in writing. And by no means ever sign an arbitration agreement on condition of enrollment. This is what the for-profits do and tantamount to signing your own debt warrant.

Remember if it's too easy, it's too sleazy.
