8/22 What I learned this week....

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

-Even though I pretend that I don't care what people think of me, having a group of students thank me for talking to them about Hospice, tell me that they admire my passion AND offer me food makes me really, really kvell. 👍😘

But dear Jebus, they look so young lol.

-it's getting depressing to read threads by people who hate Nursing, don't want to actually touch sick people, and attend schools so sketchy that the students think the floor nurses are supposed to be teaching them the tasks that rightfully their CI should be overseeing.

1) It is really, really hard to put a permanent pacemaker in a 2.5 kg baby. I mean, really hard.

2) It is simultaneously freeing AND frightening to tell your manager that you will be leaving when you finish your next degree.

3) Baskin-Robbins Chocolate Fudge ice cream is thiiiissssss close to the chocolate ice cream old man Deitrich used to make in the 60s.

4) There is a Baskin-Robbins store in Terre Haute, Indiana with a DRIVE-THROUGH!!!!

Welcome back, girlie! :inlove:

I've learned that my MIL with Alzheimer's can make me laugh one minute, and break my heart the next. I miss her.

I've learned (from other people) that my son is having a good time in college.

I've learned that when I think I am acting like a total jerk, other people don't think so. (I have to work on my Mean. I am perceived as a mush.)

I've learned that 80s music Rules.

I've learned I'm glad ixchel is back, because her nurseyness is exciting to behold!

I've learned that Atticus Finch has crept up on my list of literary crushes.

I've learned that I'm not the only Mets fan dipping her toe in the Hope Pool.

I've learned..

1. I should immediately deactivate my Netflix account and probably take a hiatus from AN. But I will probably do neither of these things.

2. I always start the summer motivated to eat healthy and exercise, but it never happens. I need to find a running partner.

3. It's never too early for ice cream.

4. Take your own advice - don't be a hypocrite.

This week I learned to: Accept that I'm no longer in nursing school (graduated and RN NCLEX done) so it's okay to be home and do nothing. It's weird, I come home after work and want to sit down and study.

Upon first read, I thought you said you learned the 80s music rules, and thought what the heck are the rules? Hahhahaa. Thanks for that.

This week I have learned that my 8 days of vacation wasn't enough.. This week I have learned that I am practicing for retirement.

Also wanted to add this.

I learned that, if you want to stay anonymous on AN, don't post questions VERBATIM on Facebook. Especially if you're posting in a group page that has 40,000+ members. I can identify several people on AN just from their threads/posts.

I didn't learn anything nursing related this week, but I did learn that my blood pressure is out of control. Doubled meds at this point and being closely watched by my PCP. Very much not pretty numbers.
