24/40 question

by nsgsup

The hospital that I work at, is thinking about offering 24/40 to help cover the weekends. Nurse manager states these people don't work holidays unless they fall on the weekends. Is this how your employer does it? What about the rest of us? Will we end up working more holidays? Just curious how it works at other facilities. Thanks........

We too have what we refer to as weekend help. They make a substantially higher pay rate, however they do not receive any benefits and they do not work Holidays unless it happens to fall on a weekend.

What do you mean by these numbers 24/40? If one works two-12 hour shifts on weekends they get paid for 40 hours? (But with no benefits, etc.) Per diem, in other words?

You regularly get Holidays off?!?!?!

I work six 12 hour days then have eight off. With this schedule I work every other weekend and any holidays that fall in my scheduled work week. There is no weekend differential.

My mom called today. She actually pulled two 12's in a row yesterday. I can't imagine what kind of shape a person is in after doing that! I'm used to 8 hours and can bearly hack 12.

Adrienurse,
My regular shift is 6/12's in a row. Kind of hard to get used to, but once you do, it's really nice. (Although I admit I'm a bit ragged by the end of day six ) And I really like the 8 days off I get after my rotation is over. Like a week's vacation every other week

Hi ,
I also do 6-12`s ,then 8 off. Have for 2 years, love it......And I hear ya, Alaska, I can be a real B***** on that last day,if I don`t get my butt to bed early,so as to get me zz`s. So I try to get "light' stuff to do, today was # 6 , and I floated to MS, lol....was the offical drug pusher for the day, and as census is way down, was a snap........Now, i have 8 loverly days to relax, and do what I want..........And I don`t answer or screen phone calls.

Oh how well I remember from so long ago.

You young kids who can work six 12 hour shifts in a row! I wouldn't be that age again for anything (though I wouldn't mind still having that kind of stamina!).

Oh to be young again...I just finished doing six 8 hour shifts today with only two days off. Six 12 hours in a row with eight days off? If I did those, I'd be off for the rest of my life b/c I'd be very deceased!!!

Young? Well, haven`t been called that in many years. The reason I do my schedule is that I`m WAy too old to work more than 3 days a week....... 5 more years, and i can retire. But who`s counting?.....
