Register Today!- Aug 19, '10 by wannabeanRN90Very touching article! Reminds me why I want to be a nurse - for the reward of making a difference.
- Aug 25, '10 by perlawBest article I ever read. I've heard so many histories about new nurses that give up on their first year after graduating that... I had considered dropping school but this article just gave me a new prospective.
I think I have a chance!!!

- Dec 9, '11 by Sewbusy~RNI know this is old but I just found it and it made me cry. Thanks for so perfectly articulating the roller coaster of the first year as an RN, and for reinforcing my reasons for applying to transfer to the NICU.
- Feb 1, '12 by RNsuperstarThank you for this. I am going to start on med surg in a couple weeks. I am excited but scared. This post made me smile....I will be there too.
- Feb 2, '12 by hkk1895I will be graduating in August and stepping on the rollercoaster. I love this article and will be printing out copies to share at clinical tonight. Thanks.
- Jun 5, '12 by MARA0523Thank you so much for your article. I am now into my 3rd month as a new nurse and school did not prepare me for reality. I am currently having thoughts of quiting and running back to the safe office job I had. How do I make it through? I am now dreading going into work. I wanted to so badly to become a nurse and felt that it was what I was truly meant to do but lately I have been filled with so much doubt. I feel that not only is there time needed for patient care but all the charting that comes along with it. I worry so much about missing charting something that I feel that I am not able to provide the time needed for patient care. How do you do all that? I always feel like I have to rush and then I set out to be there for my patients and then you get 2 more admissions!!! And more charting
!!!! How do I get past this feeling? I am not a quitter, I worked too hard to get here and now I have this big mountain to climb over and I feel like running away

I would do all you can to make it for a year. and meanwhile look at other jobs in nursing you could be interested in. I'm not surprised that it is difficult but I am surprised that new nurses get such a jolt of reality, how come they aren't prepared better by their schools?
I am so sorry you are struggling!
you could also check out your EAP (counseling) which is usually paid for by the facility where you work. they might be able to help you figure out survival strategies and/or a plan ..
xo
it was a great and inspiring article.
