Research is important in any field of medicine as it improves our understanding of disease pathology and helps to determine the most effective treatment for that disease. For instance, research allowed medicine to determine that the bacteria H. pylori causes ulcers and that the treatment for ulcers begins with an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. Without that knowledge, we might still be treating ulcers with baking soda!
