Student looking into GI nursing and asks for advice

Hi Everyone!

My name is Sara and I am a legally blind student nurse. I am really interested in doing GI nursing, but I know I wont be able to work with sedation due to my vision. If something were to happen to my patient I would not be able to draw medications fast enough. I'm also interested in ET nursing.

So here comes my question. Any GI or ET nurses out there see a place were I can still work safely and yet still involve GI? (The area I am the most interested in). Your answers would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!

Hi Sara,

At my ambulatory place of employment, there are 3 areas of work: 1) preop where you have the patient sign permission forms, start the IV and do a history 2) procedure room where the nurse comes and gets the patient, draws up meds, pushes meds (depends on the Dr.), monitors patient during the procedure and then gives report afterward to the recovery nurse 3) recovery monitors patient and intervenes if necessary (meds, O2, etc.) and initiates patient teaching.
