Returning to work, experience GI nursing?

Hi,
I am returning to practice as a nurse. I am very interested in the GI nursing and am wondering about applying for an Endoscopy nursing position. I worked in an ICU/CCU unit, then did cardiac rehab. I have been off the "floors" for 11 years but only out of practice (Cardiac Rehab) for 3 years. I am wondering if it is necessary to return to the floors versus applying for an Endoscopy nursing position. What kind of things do you do? What is your worst day? I am considering specializing in GI and I think this would be a great transition. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I have a friend that recently returned to Nursing after a break for about 8 yrs. She is the very field you speak of. She loves it! She recieved proper training by the facility. It's suprising what you remember once you began to practice again. Hopefully you have done CEU's and reading recently to prepare yourself. I currently work in PACU which include some GI work and love it! Good luck. Robin RN

In CT we don't need to have CEU's but my licensed has never expired (I have only been out of practice for 3 years- Cardiac Rehab outpatient) but off the floors (out of ICU/CCU) for 11 years. I saw a position and was told I needed recent conscious sedation or GI experience

so I don't know which direction I am going to go yet. Also where does one get just GI experience? Thanks

Apply somewhere else if possible. G.I. nurses come from different backgrounds, frequently OR, PACU, ICU or ER. It helps being used to monitoring patients and giving I.V. sedation but it sounds like with your previous experiences you're used to that anyway.The rest is easy!
