Help! Need info on NJ tubes

by lkubin

I am looking for information regarding nursing implications for patients with nasointestinal or NJ tubes. Checking placement, positioning for insertion, feedings, etc. I cannot find information on the internet or in any resource book I've tried. Can anyone give me some guidance, please?

WELL,
We place NJ's endoscopically, I really don't think they can be safely placed any other way. As far as placement, the tube should be weighted to prevent migration, and air bolus or aspiration of contents is not effective for determining placement. X ray is the only effective means of verifying placement. Feedings should be given continuously to ensure adequate absorption of nutrients, because boluses are usually given to prevent aspiration. Hope this helps!
