Hello guys, I have been a member of allnurses for a while now and this is my first post! I am currently an LPN student in my second semester with only the summer till graduation and i was wondering when was a good time to start seeking employment? Thanks a lot!

Some people may disagree with me, but I didn't start my job search until I already had my temporary license in my possession. Having my license gave the hiring folks one less reason to turn me away.

Some of my acquaintances attempted to find work before graduation and were repeatedly told by hiring managers, "Come back to us and reapply when you have a license." There are GPN (graduate practical nurse) positions being offered by some facilities where they'll allow you to work for up to 120 days after graduation without a license, but you must pass NCLEX on the first attempt to retain employment with these places.

I agree with Commuter. Wait until you have passed the exam and have a license in your hand. You are probably going to want to spend good time this summer studying for the NCLEX.

If you want to get a jump start, it might be a good idea to prepare your resume (leaving a blank line for your license #). You could also compile a list of potential employers. While you are not submitting your resume and applications until you are licensed, you will have a lot of the leg work done and should be ready to go once you have your license in hand.

The day I received my passing letter, I arranged to drive to the board to pick up a temporary license. When I had my temporary license in hand, I began applying for jobs. I had a friend who passed the exam, walked into a facility and was offered a job, but could not start working until the license was issued by the State.

Maybe you can apply for something called Interim Permit (look if your boards offer that), and do a search of what hospitals (maybe the one where you are doing your clinicals) accept this. Once you pass your NCLEX, they might work something out to keep you there. If you don't want to do that... you can ask about student nurse programs, or just wait till after you get your NCLEX results, that way you can assure your interviewer that you have a license coming your way or you can start setting appointments for interviews

RIght now, try to finish your second semester, and focus on graduating ... thinking about a job right now will only bring extra stress that you don't need.

I had the same experience as The Commuter. I attended a huge health care job fair in Philly but basically it was call us when you get your license. I began looking for a job as soon as I received it. IMHO it was a waste of gas and time to look before I had the license.

Why a waste of gas, when you have the internet???

She can start calling or searching for a job while the license comes... just to find out at least what the requirements are. Besides, some people would let you apply/interview if you have proof that you passed your NCLEX.
