Re: what an lpn does at work

Hi, I'm an LPN- new grad- . As an LPN you can give meds-only specific ones like the ones that are not high alert. You can do wound care, V.S, but cannot start I.V's or do INITIAL pt assesments. We also cannot give drugs through IV or start them like said before, unless you are trained specifically and your facility allows you to. We cannot draw blood or give bld transfusions. Really our scope of practice is limited but ultimately it depends on your states guidelines, check 'um out, see what they say. Good Luck to you!

Re: what an lpn does at work

The big question is what can't an LPN do. Here the diference between RN & LPN is the LPN can't Hang Blood, Do IV pushes, pronounce someone dead. Other than that, if it needs to be done, we do it.

Re: what an lpn does at work

Really what a LPN does is limited only by what your state and facility allows. In Michigan LPNs can't initially hang an IV unless they take additional education. They can maintain an IV line however. Depending on your facility LPNs can do blood draws. I don't know of any meds an LPN can't administer. There are courses aides can take to be allowed to give meds and phelbotomists usually recieve in house training. You should probably check out your states board of nursing to see what is allowed in your state for the LPNs scope of practice.

there are alot of opportunites in austin. take some time and weigh your options. DONT take a position if the DON or nurse managers seem DESPERATE!!! I hear the hospitals dont have alot of lvn jobs in this area, but if they do they dont pay that great($13-15/hr). you may make more working prn at the hospital. Nursing homes start at $18/hr and usually offer sign on bonuses(avg. $1000). Temp agencies pay around 18-23+/hr, but they sometimes want you to have at least 1 yr. of experience.
