Talking Thinking of becoming an LPN

Hi everyone

I am very much considering becoming an LPN. I am going to be calling a local technical school, on Monday, and getting the information for their LPN program. I'm so excited, and my family is being so supportive and encouraging.

I am a wife, and a stay at home mother to 3 children, ages 9, 6 & 1. I plan to go back to work once my youngest starts kindergarten in 4 yrs. So that gives me plenty of time to go to school. I plan to do schooling part-time.

I helped take care of my grandmother, before she passed away, and I really do think that is what really made me realize that I'd love to become a nurse.

I look forward to getting to know everyone here. This is an awesome site. Wish me luck with the school. I am very excited and extremely nervous.

Re: Thinking of becoming an LPN

Congratulations on your decision and good luck with school! You are going to do GREAT!

Your story is very similar to mine. I was also a SAHM who went back to college when my baby was a year old. I was taking night classes at a local community college. Four years later...I am still taking a class or two at the CC, but I am also in a LVN program. While he started Kindergarten this past fall, I am excited that I will start working by the time he is in 1st grade. Even though my initial plans didn't pan out (that was to be a working RN at this point), I feel that I am so much closer to my goals and I don't feel I wasted a moment of my time over the past few years in school. I just hope to finish college before my kids start!

The best of luck to you. I know how excited you must be and you should also be very proud of yourself for making this wonderful choice.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am a little scared, but mostly excited.

Good luck to you as well.

Re: Thinking of becoming an LPN

Well, I called the tech school today, and they are sending me information about the LPN program, but I'm kind of bummed, because they said it's only a full-time program that runs M-F 8am-3:45pm. Right now, I can't swing that, because I have an 18 month old, and I babysit my 2 nieces during the weekdays. We can't afford daycare right now either. So it looks like I'm going to have to wait until my little one starts Kindergarten (in 3+ yrs) before I can pursue schooling.
Until then, I plan to read as much about nursing as I possibly can. Any recommendations on some good books?
I can't believe how much I want this. I am determined to make this happen... someday.

Is there a part-time community college LPN or RN program near you? This might be a possibility since it will enable you to attend school while still caring for children.
