Thinking about LVN/LPN program, but....

Ok, I am really new to allnurses.com, but I need some help....I just became a new mom in Feb. 08 and my baby is the best thing that's happened to me. Right now, I'm getting my Master's online in Counseling. I have a BA in Psychology from UT Knoxville....2 years ago, I was in the middle of taking pre-reqs for nursing school and I had my 2nd miscarriage, so I dropped out in the middle, thinking that it wasn't meant to be. When I gave birth to my daughter, the nurses were so genuine and great, one of the RN's actually asked me have I thought about becoming a nurse, because of my personality. I'm thinking about it again. I graduate with my Master's in 2009 and I've been thinking about doing the LVN program here in Houston. They have a few LVN/LPN programs in the area, and I'm thinking about trying to get in and do it. My husband is supportive, but thinks I wasted time with the master's. My goal is to try to break into Psych Nursing or Case Management. I've worked in Mental Health and I enjoyed it. I'm at a crossroad.....

The answer to your question lies in what you ultimately hope to accomplish. My advice to you would be to go for your RN. There is nothing wrong with becoming an LPN, please don't misunderstand me. But job opportunities for LPNs in acute psych and case management are very limited. I am a former LPN, now RN, and you would not believe the doors that have opened up to me with the new title and broadened scope of practice. I will say though, that I highly value the experience I obtained as an LPN. I also beg to differ with your husband about your master's degree. In the long run, that will help you out even if you pursue nursing. Good luck in whatever route you choose.

Re: Thinking about LVN/LPN program, but....

Nursing was a major career change for me but I had done my first one amost 20 years and while I really value education I'm not sure there is too much benefit to a lot of degree hopping. I'd consider trying to work within the field your masters allows for a while before starting something else. If nothing else it will might help your DH feel like you are utilizing that degree and will allow you to get your self organized after the huge life change you have just experienced. Many congratulations on the birth of your baby.

I would go for your RN (BSN) since you will have a masters degree already. Good luck and congrats.

I am LPN, but If I had a master's I would Go RN all the way. You probably already have many of the pre-req under your belt. And because nursing involves so much psych and counseling, you would undoubtably make an excellent nurse. I gave up nursing school when my son was little. I thought I was missing too much time from him. I wish I had stuck with it. From a career standpoint, I am just getting started where I should be 14 years down the road with experience, retirement funds, and benefits. Congrats on your baby. And hope you make the choice that makes YOU happy.

PS...I was 24 when I quit and 35 when I went back.
