A.S. or certificate for LVN

I am currently trying to decide if I should attend my local community college and earn an Associate degree for LVN or attend a school such as western career college and earn a certificate for LVN. I am leaning towards western career college because my community college as a waiting list. I was wondering if it matters to employers if an lvn has a degree or a certificate. Thank you

Re: A.S. or certificate for LVN

From what I can gather, an LPN graduating from anywhere would have a certificate of completion for successfully passing the LPN cirriculum in that area. Many community colleges offer LPN programs, and may even have pre-requisites that RNs take, but ultimately, she/he would still graduate with a certificate. Maybe other states have different situations, but this is what I see in my neck of the woods.

If you go to a vocational school, and then, wish to become an RN, you might have to take college level Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, English and others, versus if you attended a community college, they may require that you take many of the pre-requisites of the RN program in order to have a smoother transition.

In my area, the employers and hiring managers tend to not care where you attended school. No manager has ever asked me, "So where did you attend school?"

As long as you're a warm body with a nursing license, you should be able to find work upon graduation. Good luck to you.

My cousin told me in GA students get an associates degree for LPN. I have NEVER heard of that before. She must be mistaken. In NY you only get a certificate for LPN like the poster stated.

Re: A.S. or certificate for LVN

I attended WCC in cali.. and received an A.S. degree from my LVN program... it's an Associate of Science Degree with an Emphasis in Nursing... Because the school I went to was WASC accredited such as most of the community college's here.. the counselor I spoke to one of the CC said the classes I took in my LVN program will be transferrable to most CC bridge programs... at WCC you could either get a certificate for LVN or if you finished you G.E. you can receive as A.S. in LVN... I was one of the two students in my class that went for the degree
