My CC offers IV therapy and Blood withdrawal certification classes but you have to be enrolled in the Nursing program already in order to take these classes. I was wondering with all of the reading, testing, and clinicals that I will have to complete should I wait until after I graduate from Nursing school or should I try while I am in Nursing school? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks

If possible, I would take those classes after nursing school is over. IV and hanging blood can be taught at the job, and the main thing right now is to complete the primary courses to sit for NCLEX. Ask them if you can register for the courses after completing the LPN program. In fact, to be honest, I would wait to take those classes even after I pass the boards. You know yourself and what is best...good luck!

Thanks so much for your advice, I really appreciate it That's exactly what I am going to do. Concentrate on my Nursing classes and passing the NCLEX. I know that if I try to do all that and add two more classes I would overwhelm myself and then my nursing classes would suffer and I cannot afford to fail and again thanks for your advice, Question thought-sorry!!!-I was told it is never to early to buy a NCLEX-PN book and I was wondering what do you recommend?

when you are done w school... getting your IV/BW while you wait for all the paperwork and testing date etc... the one good thing is to have it on your license .. but thats just my thought so my license looks more polished when I look for a job .. Im taking my IV class .. it happens to fall on the very last day of nursing school .. and its only 30 hours. So I will be done w that and everythng can be submitted together .. hopefully anyway ..

Hi. Does anyone know where an RN can get some practice on blood withdrawal? My friend got a job offer from this registry, but she needs to be confident in drawing blood because that's all the job requires. She tried to enroll in a class, but she was refused because she's an RN. Any suggestions?

Perhaps she could enroll in a phlebotomy technician class at a local community college or trade school.

I've taken the IV class twice. It was only a four day class where everything could be learned in class. The difficult part was getting successful sticks on classmates. I would wait until your course is over. Then you can concentrate better. Most schools that offer this have the course after the regular program is completed.

I also got practice by taking a phlebotomy course that was offered at a local community college, however, this was a one time course at that school.

I don't agree on the phlebotomy class, they only teach you to draw blood ... there's no IV teaching there and it could also be very costly. I want to echo what most of you have said... wait till you graduate, some teachers will offer the class even if you don't have your license, once you have it they will release your certificate. Keep in mind that you wont be able to start any IVs or draw blood until you have your license and proof of your certification.
