I may have an interview next working at our local prison. This would be my first job as an LPN, and I don't know anything about it. Would it be a good first job? If anyone is working or has worked at such a place, I would appreciate any info!

I use to work as a correctional nurse and it is very interesting. It may be a very tough job for a new nurse. Good luck.

Prisons have a major tendency to understaff nurses. It is a very interesting job and I really enjoyed doing my psych clinical at a prison, but it is hard work and very stressful. What makes it even worse is that you are in a rare position-you are basically your patients only advocate and nurses and corrections officers are pretty much always at odds with each other. Corrections officers will want to use their methods to take care of patients who have problems, even if their problems are clearly psychotic in nature, but you will want to treat them as you would any other patient. If an officer wants to seclude a patient or put them in restraints when there is a more appropriate solution, it is your job to advocate for that patient. Prisoners have rights too. Situations like these can cause a lot of tension and problems. You have to be able to forget about the crime the patient committed, treat them like a patient, and advocate for their rights. At least this has been my experience.
