LTC patient to nurse ratio

Though the title should be pretty self explanatory....
What is your LTC facilities nurse to patient ratio?

Where I work it is 25/30 to 1 nurse and 3 CNAs. It is doable as long as everything goes smoothly. Nancy

I work 3rd shift in a LTC facility and I have 26 residents with 2 CNA's.

I would say you all have it good. I work in south west TN and on 11-7 shift I have 72 residents and 3 cna's on a good night. On a typical night it is me and 2 cna's. My salary is $13.85/hr which includes .50 shift diff. All of this with 18 yrs of nursing experience under my belt. Since joining ALLNURSES.COM I believe I need to rethink where I work and where I live. Thanks every one for letting me vent, last night was a bad night. One cna and me which included a fall, a death and shipping one out to the hospital. We got through the shift, and was I glad to see 7 am. thanks again.

sue, u are definitely being ripped off! I have an LPN friend who makes about $28 an hour on nights since she has been at the same nursing home for 15 years! Shes going back for her RN now bc she said thats nothing compared to her friends checks she sees who are RNs.

Also, around here in Central FL the STARTING wage for new grads in LTC is 15-16/hr! Have u at least considered agency work in your area or home health? I know those pay more anywhere u go. Im from East TN originally and have been in FL for a few years now. But I remember I made 10 bucks an hour just at a little part time secretary gig and didnt do much except be nice to ppl and surf the internet! that is a sad story bc u are overworked and WAY underpaid! I just cant believe ANY place would pay their experienced nurses that....I could maybe understand a new nurse but u are very experienced! Please take your skills where you will be better compensated!

I work in the Chattanooga area work 11-7 with 47 residents & 2 or 3 CNA's. I am a brand new nurse (as of 2/05) I started at $15.50 per hour.

OMG, I can't imagine trying to pass meds and administer treatments for 72 residents.

I work in an alzheimers unit, and it is 1.5 licensed and 5 CNA'S to 40 pts. on 7a-3pm shift. I make 19.02 an hour as a manager over the unit.....Been a nurse for 12 yrs....LTC is very hard job, but rewarding in the same token!

Staffing should reflect the acuity of the resident. Notice that I said should instead of does. We run 5 nurses on days for 100 residents and 3 on nights. But the extra nurse on days is for the skilled care since there are so many more complications going on at any given time. I think it is hard to compare one facility to another since we would not really know the acuity level. For example 72 residents at night may possibly be a few midnight meds, a couple of tx's, and a handful of charting. Midnights may be kept very busy though just tring to keep the wanders off the floor and the paperwork updated. LTC can be very hard work on any shift.
