Can LPN's do that, work in that area that is? I'd really like to...and I plan to go on for my RN soon after I get my LPN (May 06)

Re: LPN's in Labour and Delivery?

While doing clinical for OB, in L&D there were only RNs because of the IV's i guess, and there was LVN/LPNs and RNs on the postpartum floor. But I think some place do hire LVN/LPNs in L&D, but it'll probably be hard to find...GOOD LUCK

Re: LPN's in Labour and Delivery?

I live in Indiana, and I just noticed a hospital advertisng for RNs or LPNs for their L&D area. It's the first one I think I've ever seen that specifically listed LPNs, though.

Re: LPN's in Labour and Delivery?

I started out in well baby nursery and then cross trained over into labor and delivery. I worked there for 7 wonderful years, but I just felt the need to move on and do something different.

It was our duty to attend births and care for the baby immediately following birth. I've attended probably about 800 births and was the baby's nurse. I attended many PALS courses, Neonatal rescusitation and CPR. It was a must to work in the delivery room.

There were some scary moments, sad moments, but mostly happy moments. Frustrations with doctors, other nurses, and patients, were sometimes paramount, but still it was a great experience.

As far as labor went, I could check a patient in, start her IV and place the EFM on her belly, and I could read the strips produced by the baby's heart rate and uterine contractions and that would indicate of course, just how a baby's delivery might turn out. The scope of an LPN does not include giving an internal exam or scalp electrode placement or anything invasive like that.

My primary role was the baby's nurse and then of course, the mom's after delivery and teaching breastfeeding, baby care, etc.

It was great working there and learning so much. I thoroughly enjoyed it and miss it and the wonderful people I worked with.
