You will be passing a lot of pills. Med lines could get up to 300 inmates!!!! In some prisons or situations like lock downs, this means you will be hiking up 5 tiers of cells BY YOURSELF!!! It is dark up there and could be dangerous. I am a pretty big , muscular guy so it didn't phase me , but I know a lot of nurses that hated "walking the tiers>" A lot of the guards don't escort the nurses so be prepared for that. You will be dealing with a very manipulative population that will cheek the pills you give them and sell or trade them to other inmates. They will try to steal your insulin needles. YOU are responsible for preventing all this and you will be in trouble if they get away with meds without shallowing or the needles. You will experience sexual harassment from time to time (whether your female or male ) and you risk getting killed in a riot situation. When stabing go down or an inmate goes man down ...you will be required to run to the scene.

It has its good points don't get me wrong. I worked in the prison ER and got to see all the drug overdoses and stabbings..... GREAT EXPERIENCE!! I would recommend going into it, just be careful.

As they say, "it's not for everyone." I found psych nursing to be a nice change from prison main line medical. Ever consider psych?

I live in the Tampa Bay area also. I am the night shift supervisor in a LTC/rehab facility. You can come and work with us if you want to. The pay is about $17.00 per hour plus night shift diff of $1.50 per hr. Also another $2.00 per hour if you work every weekend and another $1.00 on to of that if you do not want benefits.

Re: LPN Corrections nursing??

Yes. The ad was in the St. Pete Times. Starting pay $24 for new grads

Thanks for the offer Geez thats a lot of shift diffs. Im still thinking about what I want to do.

I am moving next Dec to Tennessee, so I have to be clear with any job I take that I am not going to be here long. Thats difficult when applying for a job as a new graduate. I found an LPN to BSN program there and am moving my whole family! So excited.

Those of you from St. Pete/ Tampa area...familiar with Palms of Pasadena Hosp? Im doing clinicals there right now and really like it.

-thanks
