hello,
Im going to be graduating LPN school in a few weeks am beginning to look for a job. This will be my first job in the healthcare field so Im not really sure what type of questions I should be prepared for them to ask me. Also, should I dress like I would for any other interview (pantsuit, etc)? I would appreciate any advice or tips you have to offer. thanks in advance!

I just graduated from LPN school 3 months ago. In the interview, they really didn't ask me a whole lot of questions, so I will defer to someone more experienced... As for interview attire, I didn't really dress that formally. A couple girls from my school showed up wearing black pant suits, black pumps, looking very conservative (which is what the school recommended). I wore some heels with black pants, and a blue cardigan with a white tank top underneath and hoop earrings.. I got hired, they didn't...But maybe there was something to the fact that I was actually comfortable in what I was wearing!

After I typed up that reply I did think of a question they gave me that tripped me up... It was "what do you expect from a supervisor?" I replied with something like "uhh, uhh... Open communication, honesty and respect!"

Hi,

I'm a Nurse Manager in a long term care facility. I think dressing as you would for any other interview should be fine. Looking neat and professional.

As far as the interview itself. It depends on the job. I think for new grads. what I like to see some idea of what your looking for. Why do you want to work here? Training someone is a big investment for me and the facility. Many times I have invested lots of time with someone and then they move off somewhere else not long after. Thinking why you want the type of nursing position your applying for helps. If they think you have a good idea of what you want to be doing it should go fine.

Last but not least...Find out how they train new grads..Are they sensitive to the fact that you will need some TLC...Too many new grads are thrown to the wolves and it can be devastating. Finding a place that supports your learning process is the key to having a great first job experience.

I found that It was helpful for me to research my company so when they were explaining it to me in the interview I could really understand, and be a part of the conversation. I would come in with questions you have for them and near the end of your interview ask if they would mind answering some of your questions, ie... What two qualities are most important to you for this position, How would you rate the work environment? As for dress I always dress in a professional manner, actually it is always the same black skirt suit, blouse and matching button on the lapel, no big earings, IMO. (though I love to wear em)! lol. and always follow up with a thank you card. I got this question once..... Define your definition of ethics and tell me a time in your life when you were faced with the toughest ethical decision........... Phew ! that was a toughy when you are not expecting it. I said, "you did good research developing challenging questions." and smirked and then tried my best to answer lol........NEVER got called back for that one...LOL...But I did for every other one! Good luck!!!!!!!
