I have been out of work for almost a year now. I live in the state of Florida. I was pregnant and had some complications then decided to stay at home with my baby. How long do you have until you are required to put your license on inactive status ? If you go inactive do you have to take some kind of refresher course to reapply ?? Is that only if you are out 4 or more years ?? I am planning another pregnancy and want to stay at home for that too. I did look on the Florida board of nursing site but couldn't find any information.

When is your current license due to expire?

When renewal time comes around, you need to find out what the requirements are for renewal. For example, is current practice required? CEUs? Or do you just pay the fee and renew?

As long as you meet the requirements for licensure, you may keep your license active. If there comes a time when you no longer meet the requirements, such as you lack adequate practice hours or CEU's, then you will have no choice but to go inactive.

It is usually better to formally place your license on inactive status rather than to simply let it lapse, because some states will charge a hefty "pentalty" to reinstate a lapsed license, which doesn't apply to licenses that are "inactive".

Should you go inactive, then later wish to reinstate your license, the State Board of Nursing will let you know what the requirements are. Some states require CEUs, some require refresher courses.
