Update: I finally got a day off from work so I visited him twice today, both this morning and this afternoon. We haven't gotten the most recent renal labs back but, I got my first look at the labs before we started the IV fluids: his BUN was 60, creatinine was nearly 6, phosphorus was really high also. Since normal values for dogs are pretty close to human I could see how bad it was. We should get the most recent renal labs tonight or tomorrow morning.
He's voiding a good bit now and looks a little better but he's still vomiting and I couldn't get him to eat any of the vet's dog food so, I went back home and grabbed some of his favorite food. He wouldn't eat most of it but, I did get him to eat two hot dogs (not the mystery meat hot dogs but high quality meat hot dogs). At least he had an appetite for something.
The vet didn't want me to give him more than two hot dogs because we want to make sure he can keep them down and, since he hasn't eaten for so long, we don't want to overload his system either. I left the hot dogs with the staff so they can try to give him a little more later.
I sat with him in the cage for a couple of hours ... just to let him know I love him. I think he might actually pull through this but, I'm going back in the morning to check on him again and see if he will eat some more.
I just hope the pet food companies realize what they have done here. My husband and I are now looking at home made dog food recipes ... because, after all of this, that's what we'll be feeding our dogs now on.
Again ... thanks so much for everybody's support.
