Yes, way too many people equate "thin" with "healthy." Oh, how wrong they are.
I used to be thin and athletic-looking. But I was always hungry and pretty darned cranky. I smoked 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day and drank a couple of pots (that's about 16 cups) of coffee per day.
Today I'm fat and I don't smoke, and I have only a cup or two of coffee per day. I might not look great, but I sure am easier to live with.
For those reasons, I will probably prefer being fat than popping a pill or having a surgical procedure.
So for me, weight loss would have everything to do with getting healthy, not just some numbers on a scale.
Yes, I have been discriminated against because I am too hefty to run down the hall, or squeeze into tight places. But you know, IMO, if you have to smoke, or drink, or do unhealthy things to lose weight just to gain public approval, well, it shows you have bigger issues than size going on.
Just my two cents.

EXACTLY!!! You were sick as a dog and yet, because you lost weight, people were happy for you!

Look, let's be honest with each other......It's not good to be overweight. I don't remember who said it, but......"nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels." It is so true. The older I get, the more I struggle with my weight. When I want something that's bad for me, I think of that quote.

Good luck. Do not allow yourself to be hungry.
It could be "emotional hunger" or "stress hunger".
Regardless being hungry only increases the chance you're going to binge on something you don't want to.
Eat healthy and eat often. I lost 14 lbs. on a diet last year I found on ediets.com and got to eat six times a day and wasn't really hungry.
Good luck!
I remember 20 years ago when I quit smoking I gained 10 lbs the first week.

Tweety's right....don't go hungry. Eat small, healthy foods, more frequently, instead of 3 greasy, high caloried meals. Snack on cut up apples or celery, etc.
I have allowed myself to get out of shape too & yesterday was the turning point. We just had our Christmas d/t going to Florida during the holidays. So...the jeans I got....too small. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Depending on how they are made, I can wear 5's, 7's or 8's. (8's being baggy slacks.)
Of course, with the low-rise style that is happening right now, and my sudden burst of "STORED ENERGY", my new phrase is..."My fat runneth over".
I'm disgusted, and have once again got to the point where I can't stand it anymore.
I wish you the best, and best wishes to everyone, in the fight against the fat bulge!
As far as being happy with being the way you are, it doesn't matter if you smoke or if you are overweight. If it's unhealthy, it's unhealthy.
I don't want to tell a pt to eat healthy, if I don't practice what I preach.

I was definitely heading for the middle aged getting overweight thing. I love my food, have 4 kids & never really lost all my pregnancy weight each time. I was up to size 12 & rising. I started swimming at the local gym but it was hit & miss each week as to how often I went.
April last year my dd started karate - my dh & ds already went. The teacher said to dd that as daddy had started with ds then mummy should, by rights, start with her. Of course dd wouldn't take no for an answer & so I started. I really enjoy it & because there is a class somewhere near every day working doesn't mean I can't go - I just pick another class another day. We pay a monthly fee & can attend as many classes as we like. On a good week I get to go 5 times!!!
Anyway, I'm trimming up nicely - easily an 8 now & can wear a 6-7 as long as it's not THAT week - if you get my drift. I haven't had to cut down on my lovely food either! The good thing is that, unlike a gym class, there is a real reward for your efforts- a higher belt if you work hard & pass your grading plus you can take part in competitions & if you do well in class the teacher says so. I think we all need encouragement - even when we're adults. More than that where else can you go & legally throw a punch at your kids????
It's great fun & we are all determined to carry on when we get to the USA.
Oh & ALL shapes, sizes & ages go. It's really friendly - despite being a martial arts class!

You guys are cracking me up! Gompers, don't you love how people butt in where they don't belong? I had a trainer at my old corporate gym look at me one day as I was getting on the treadmill - I was doing 6 miles a day at lunch - say, "You're running distance? That's great for weight loss!" "Fred, I've been doing this for a year." His face well. "Oh. Then it must be what you're eating." Well, no stuff, fool!
Bethin, the thinnest I've been since puberty was 116 - I had been to Egypt and got dysentery. People kept wanting to know how I did it on one hand, and on the other I had a therapist who kept questinoing whether I had become anorexic. "No, you idiot, I can't stop *colloquial term for excreting.*!"
Thanks for all of the support. My biggest complaint, aside from vanity, is that my knees hurt and I feel sluggish and slow. I'm not used to being fluffy.
Well, I'm out of contact overnight. DH is having a TUrP and I have to stay overnight with him. H'es askeered.
