Foods you eat/ate when broke

I remember entire weeks in my early 20s that my roommate and I subsisted on something her father had called lo mein when she was growing up, spaghetti noodles tossed with butter in a bowl that had been rubbed with garlic. One summer I worked at a donut shop and went days eating nothing else. It took years before I enjoyed a donut as a treat as much as I had before that summer. I hope those days are behind us forever, but if worst ever comes to worst again, my son and I love spaghetti and Prego sauce, so that will probably be our food of choice. Of course, my husband is in the restaurant industry, so even if we have no $ he'll be able to eat for free at work, lol.

Wasn't broke, but pinching pennies during school. Mac and cheese was a big thing. I still enjoy it, too.

Generic mac and cheese. 19 cents a box. Couldn't afford the Kraft brand.

Ramen noodles, 12/$1

Plain macaroni or spagetti. Was living high on the hog when i could buy cheese for it or sauce.

LOTS of iceberg lettuce salads

Drank a lot of tap water

Totino's pizza was a splurge when I was on my own. They were 2 for a buck. Now I think they are .75 And could make a box of kraft mac and cheese last two days. Now if I don't get my meat and taters I'm cranky.

I distinctly remember my first apartment - I would come home from work for lunch and saute mushrooms in butter. Yum.

What I found when I was poor and living on my own was I wanted to learn about cooking differently than my mom.

The first meal I cooked for my boyfriend was Kraft Mac and Cheese with tuna! He had the good grace to eat it.

Maybe mom wasn't such a bad cook after all.

Re: Foods you eat/ate when broke

As a child, sometimes bread with margarine on it sprinkled with sugar was the main meal three times a day. I still like that "comfort food" from time to time. Amazing, uh?

I have never cared for grocery shopping, but being "temporarily defunded" this past year has given me a new reason to love the experience once I can do it again. I miss eating more fruit, more veggies, more salads, more meat...........and an occasional dessert would be good, too.
