Re: Foods you eat/ate when broke

I recall eating (what my witty mom called "*hit on a shingle"). Ground meat in gravy on toast.

"Hit" on a shingle to us used to be chipped beef gravy on toast. I love the Stouffer's creamed chipped beef, it's one of my favorite wintertime foods.

Yes, whenever I've heard of SOS, it refers to creamed dried beef. I also like Stouffer's, which tastes exactly like my Mom made it. The stuff that has such a bad name must be made differently. It was just recently I heard of calling hamburger gravy on toast SOS.

Foods I would eat when broke? Baked potatoes with melted cheese.

I forgot taters. Always got them when they went on sale.

I've always thought about buying that stuff, but I never had it before (homemade or otherwise) so I wasn't sure. It looks good though! What do you eat it on - just toast?

That's all I eat it on, but I know people who have it on biscuits or with scrambled eggs. You could probably have it on egg noodles, rice or mashed potatoes, too.

White toast usually

It's also good on a biscuit for breakfast.

Oh, YUM you guys!

I'll bet it has a zillion grams of sodium in it though, and I'm on a low-salt diet during this pregnancy because of my blood pressure. I'll put it on my shopping list for after I deliver - it'll be wintertime then so that's perfect!

Speaking of potatoes, I used to make a kickin' potato soup.

Also corn chowder was very cheap, easy to make, and made a few meals.
