Re: LPN as Case Manager?

I have seen jobs posted for LPNs in CM department of some of the major insurance carriers - Med Mutual for one. The pay for RNs and LPNs was less than hospital positions but not bad. Hospital departments hire only RNs - at least ones I know of. Good Luck!

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

Hi DSanto,
I live in NJ and work in NY as a Nurse Case Manager. I am an RN and used to work in a organization that hires LPNs as Nurse Case Managers. The case management is done telephonically. The nurse does not see her client face to face but depends on assessment completed by visiting nurses to determine what services is necessary. Although some managed care insurance organizations will hire LPNs in this capacity, I don't know of any hospitals that do. I do know that more and more organizations are hiring LPNs because of the financial advantage. The company benefits enormously. The disparity in salary betwn LPN and RN could range from 20K-40K.

The LPNs that I have worked with have been extremely competent and have several years experience in a hospital and skilled nursing facility setting. The clinical experience is invaluable.
Hopefully this has been of some assistance to you.

Are you getting pounded today with snow like we are? We have almost 5 inches. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

Just wanted to add this lil tid bit:
Salaries for RN CMs (at least in NY) are pretty durn good. Depending on who employs you, the salary can go up to and over 90k, with the average being in the mid 70s to low 80s. Based on interviews and job offerings that I've received, salaries are increasing. A lot of hospital floor nurses find that they have to work the evening or night shift to push the salary up higher. In most cases, as a CM, you work Mon-Fri from 9a-5p with holidays and weekends off. In addition to working for insurance organizations, there are also opportunities in home care agencies, psych residential facilities and group homes.
If this is what you want to do, go for it. Again, be mindful that a clinical background will allow you to be much more successful in this position as well as have more confidence in your capabilities.
Best to you!

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

Hello,

I'm sorry for not replying to anyone's messages. For some reason I was not notified by email.

Thank you to everyone for your advice.

Charna, I didn't realize the position paid so well. I am shocked and happy. I've been hearing around $17 per hour to start as an LPN and so I've been disappointed. What a difference in the salaries!! I would love to work 9-5 and have experiece working in offices for many years. I love to do administrative type work, I'm organized and it just comes natural to me. I am hearing though that you think I need to be getting my experience for a few years first. Does this mean I am doomed to make $17 per hour for a few years??

Any advice would be truly appreciated. BTW, we got snow in the morning, but not what I expected at all. Now it's just kind of slushy and yucky! Too bad I can't afford to live in California!!

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

Hey DSanto,
Without a doubt, I believe that clinical experience such as hospital nursing would definitely prepare you well for a position in case management. However, there are nurses that enter case management without any experience whatsoever. It's not the best way but it can be done.

Again, if it's what you want then go for it. I've never been one to travel a path just because others said I should. I create my own paths. Sometimes it works well for me, other times it doesn't but I've certainly learned a lot.

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

I am an LPN, with alot of hospital clinical experience, who is now a case manager (telephonic). I do work for a local HMO in the Madison, WI area and there are only 2 other RN's in my department. I love and the pay is way way way better than in the clincal setting. I did start with this company as a Healthcare Advocate (auth/deny requests for OOA care). Any one want my old job so I can move into my new one? LOL

Re: LPN as Case Manager?

Medical Case Management-I held this title and coordinated the program-as a LPN and in an out-patient setting. I received additional training to be able to learn and perform the social service aspect. It was a great, well-paid job but as a lot of these types of jobs go, it's very dependent on funding. It's great if it's available to you. Most times, it was just nursing with a more extensive social service component. 9-5, no weekends. Your weekends are free to earn extra money or just enjoy.
