Do you really need a certificate to get a CCM?

Hi,

I would like to know if one needs to obtain a certificate through a course before taking the actual CCM exam? I have had over 23 years nursing experience, at least 10 years in DM, Home Care, and UR. With all that experience do I need a "certificate" before I take the exam? If so, can you recommend programs online. I only have an ADN and unable to obatin a BSN at this point in my life. I need to advance my career and thought that this would be a good path to take.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jill W. RN

I never had a certificate. I just had to have 2 years of case management experience before I could take the exam to be a CCM.

Karen is correct. No certificate is required to sit for CCM, only an eligible license or certification (please note that certification is defined differently than certificate.) The employment requirements are as follows: 2 years of acceptable CM employment experience, or 1 year acceptable CM employment with supervision by a CCM, or 1 year acceptable employment as a supervisors of CMs.
As a RN, you posess the necessary licensure. I suggest you visit www.ccmcertification.org to become familiar with the certificant requirements. Feel free to ask any additional questions you may have.

Re: Do you really need a certificate to get a CCM?

Thanks for the feedback. I have been to the site you mentioned and done a few quizzes which I didn't do so bad. So I am glad I saved myself the cost of a certificate program. That would have definetly been a waste of time. I have read a lot of the posts and am gathering my study aides that have been recommended. I think I will wait until the fall 08 exam to do it on computer though. Can't believe they haven't converted to online exams by now!
Thanks again!
