Public health opportunities in DD nursing?

Hello - I will be graduating from nursing school in 2006 and I'm trying to figure where I would fit in the best. I have a master's in public health and I will be getting a BSN. I nannied in college for a year and worked with a child who had cerebral palsy and love it.

Are there opportunities to work with children who have disabilites for someone with my background? Could I be a public health nurse that only deals with children who have disabilities?

There are opportunities in DD to work with children, but I would suggest that you get about 1-2 years pediatric as well as med-surg nursing before you go into the field. A lot of work in DD involves Triage, and you need to be well grounded in med-surg to be able to make assessments over the phone and give instructions to direct staff.
