Hello Everyone! I am looking for employment in Florida working with children and/or adults with DD/MR. I am having a very hard time. We looking to move from Iowa to Florida in about 1 1/2 years. (Waiting until after we get married) Will move to the Gulf Coast. Any help will do. I currently work at a vocational program. I am an LPN working with adults. The disabilites vary - MR, autism, down syndrome. I also am the Worker's Comp nurse for the agency of about 120 employees. Thanks for the help! Mickie

You haven't told us what steps you've taken so far, so if this information is too basic, I'll just apologize in advance. I'd do a web search for the agency that coordinates services for people with developmental disabilities in Florida and start there. Here in California (as in most of the rest of the nation, I believe) autism is being diagnosed at epidemic levels. Our Regional Center system has nurses that do vision, hearing and dental screenings on all children that are assessed for RC services. I would imagine that there are similar agencies in every state. You could also contact Aging and Independence (that's what it is called in CA) and see if they can get you in touch with the programs serving adults with DD. I would think your services would be in great demand; seems like it is just going to be a matter of getting plugged into the right systems. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the reply. I have searched the web using multiple wording. I found a state institiution and one waiver home. Not too much else at this point. I will keep trying. I think we have decided to move to Homasassa in Citrus County. But other than that - who knows yet! Thanks again for the reply!! Mickie

If you move to Philadelphia, PA, our facility has several nursing positions open!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Florida is too humid. Philadelphia is only 70 miles from the Jersey coast

Hi,

I'm an RN 28yrs with DD. Looking to move to fla west coast around naples. Have about 2 years to retire here and take care of Wife's folks until....
I talked with Fla Nursing Dept, they suggest licensure asap and contacting the childrens hospitals in the area. I ran the care at home agency in long island new york but it is not a viable program in fla. Want to share data, leads?

Christopher
