"A Place In The World" - Living With Adult Autism On ABC News "Nightline"
Friday, October 7

More than one million Americans are autistic. It's the fastest
growing developmental disability estimated at one in 166 births a year.
Much has been reported on autistic youth and as we come to terms with this
trend among children, many wonder: what happens when all these children
grow up?
ABC News correspondent John Donvan and producer Caren Zucker offer an
in-depth look at adult autism through the experiences of two autistic
adults and their families in "A Place in the World" to be aired this Friday
October 7 on ABC News "Nightline" at 11:35pm.
Both Mr. Donvan and Ms. Zucker have family members with autism.
As Mr. Donvan reports, a significant challenge facing these families
is establishing enduring support for their children to last through
adulthood and life. Jim and Jen Hoppe of Wycoff, NJ, whose 21-year- old
daughter Jamie is profoundly autistic, helped develop a school, where Jamie
made enormous progress for 16 years. But, as Jen explains, there was no
place for Jamie to go as an adult: "Nobody knows what the plan is. The
number of people with autism has just overwhelmed everyone. .there is no
plan. we have to make a plan."
For the parents of Paul DiSavino, who is 36 and autistic, the concern
now is what will happen to their son after they've gone. As Mr. Donvan
reports, their current solution is a group home, but the alternative would
be unbearable. Says Paul's mother, Marlene DiSavino of Rivervale, NJ, "He
will not survive it . it would be regressing back to the institutions, back
to not caring, just doing, just warehousing them . not recognizing what's
important, and just abandoning them."
"A Place in the World: Living with Adult Autism" airs on "Nightline"
this Friday, October 7, 2005 at 11:35 p.m. (ET).
Ted Koppel is the anchor and managing editor of "Nightline." Tom
Bettag is the executive producer. "Nightline airs at 11:35 p.m. weeknights
on the ABC Television Network.

There was a fairly recent study done by University of Arkansas researchers where Autistic children were found to have significantly lower levels of glutathione. Glutathione is the major antioxidant in cells important for detoxification and elimination of environmental toxins. Studies using tissue samples from newborn infants reveal significantly higher glutathione levels and glutathione production from girls compared to boys (Lavoie 1997). 70 percent of Autistics are boys.

Do vaccines even still have thimerosol in them? Is this still a problem today?
All vaccines have trace amounts of thimerosal in them-except flu shots. They have the full amount.

Here are some recent articles on Autism:

New Study Links Thimerosal with Immune System Dysfunction

A team of cell biologists, toxicologists and molecular bioscientists at UC Davis has published a study connecting thimerosal with disruptions in antigen-presenting cells known as dendritic cells obtained from mice. The study provides the first evidence that dendritic cells show unprecedented sensitivity to thimerosal, resulting in fundamental changes in the immune system's ability to respond to external factors.

A former Government medical officer responsible for deciding whether medicines are safe has accused the Government of "utterly inexplicable complacency" over the MMR triple vaccine for children.
Dr Peter Fletcher, who was Chief Scientific Officer at the Department of Health, said if it is proven that the jab causes autism, "the refusal by governments to evaluate the risks properly will make this one of the greatest scandals in medical history".

Re: Autism, mercury and cover up???

I am pleased to announce that there will be a media briefing in Washington next Thursday, March 30th, to update reporters on all of the recent development in the mercury autism controversy. I am especially pleased that Katie Wright will be joining us. She has a lot to say!

Please feel free to circulate this.

Many thanks for your continued support.

David Kirby

MEDIA ADVISORY

--VACCINES, MERCURY AND AUTISM--

MAJOR BRIEFING ON SIGNIFICANT NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ONGOING CONTROVERSTY-

WHAT: A panel briefing on the growing evidence of a link between mercury, vaccines and autism, and important new developments on Capitol Hill, in major universities and within the mainstream media.

WHO: Dan Olmsted, journalist for UPI who writes the regular column, “The Age of Autism.” Mr. Olmsted will discuss his recent reporting on unvaccinated populations – including Amish children in Pennsylvania and patients at a holistic medical practice outside Chicago – as well as other investigations into early cases of autism, and reports of improvements after medical treatments.

David Kirby, author of the book “Evidence of Harm – Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic.” Mr. Kirby will discuss newly published science from major US universities that support the mercury-autism link, media reports of recent declines in new autism numbers, and newly leaked IOM transcripts that would indicate undue pressure by the CDC over IOM vaccine committee members to reject the thimerosal-autism hypothesis.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who will unveil a bill to provide for a new study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations of American children. Data from this relatively simple study could settle once and for all the question of a link between vaccines and autism, ADD, ADHD and other disorders. Rep. Maloney will also discuss the Federal bill to ban thimerosal in vaccines, which she co-sponsors with Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL), and a possible Congressional move to empanel a new committee of the Institute of Medicine that would consider new evidence to support the link.

Katie Wright, daughter of NBC/Universal President Bob Wright and Suzanne Wright, founders of the new autism research charity “Autism Speaks.” Ms. Wright will talk about her son’s autism diagnosis, her belief that thimerosal contributed to his illness, and recent progress he has made using state-of-the-art biomedical interventions. Ms. Wright will also discuss her dismay at the American Academy of Pediatrics, which does not publicly support the Combating Autism Act of 2005, reportedly because the bill earmarks money for research into vaccine preservatives.

WHEN: Thursday, March 30th. Breakfast at 8:30am, briefing from 9:00-10:00am.

WHERE: National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, Washington, DC.

CONTACTS: Olmsted: 202-302-3753; dolmsted@upi.com

Kirby: 718-230-4250; dkirby@nyc.rr.com

Maloney: Afshin Mohamadi, 202-225-7944

Re: Autism, mercury and cover up???

it is a toxicity issue...it boils down to who is genetically predisposed to be unable to detoxify thimerosal after multiple vaccinations. please watch this video (all 4 parts) http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...arch&plindex=3

Re: Autism, mercury and cover up???

Thank you to everyone who participated in this discussion. I have a son who is diagnosed with Autism. There was a time when he received numerous vaccines in one day that resulted in him having to be hospitalized. Although, I was very much aware of Mercury and the rise in Autism statistics I still choosed to have my younger daughter vaccinated. She is just fine.

I would like to take some of the info that was supplied here on this forum and some of my own and write a paper on this for a class if that is ok with everyone. There is still so much we need to learn about this disorder. My son is now eleven years old, he is also blind in his left eye, and attends a regular school in a regular classroom with minimal supports. This is from a child that did not speak nor could he draw a line or hold a pencil. I was told his prognosis would be that of "Rain Man". I could write a book on all of the interventions we used to get him to the progress he is making today.

Yes, diet is a huge part of this disorder. Yes, intense
behavior modification is the key to improving their quality of life. Yes, Yes, Yes, we need more health professional with an Open Mind that our willing to work with our children and incorporate new ideas and ways of learning. Yes, we also need more teachers who understand what Autism really is and take a chance on these kids in Regular classrooms if the child is capable in learning in that environment.

The best thing I did for my son was when he was able to attend kindergaten was to go check out different schools and different classrooms in the area. He was in a theraputic pre-school setting at a school for children with Autism. I did not feel a special ed class was adequate for him. I found a new teacher who was very apprehensive about taking Anthony into his regular classroom but I begged him to give Anthony
a shot. I assured him I would be there to guide him every step of the way and if he felt it wasn't working out I would find different placement for him no questions asked. Although Anthony couldn't draw a line or anything at this point. He could type since he was two years old. He used actual money to do his math work. We used shaving cream to write with. etc. Since, it was only kindergarten I was more intersted in the social skills aspect of his life with "regular" kids. He learned through classical and operant conditioning what was appropriate, he also learned through modeling.

Ok, I think I rambled on enough and went way off topic here so I apologize. Thank you for your interest and keeping the fight alive for all the people who suffer with Autism. Lastly, Remenber Autism Speaks. Stacy

Yes! My kids all tested high for heavy metals. The two that tested the highest are the ones with autism. (My late brother-in-law was HFA.) We did some oral chelation with the two autistic ones. I saw improvement - bursts of language after rounds of chelation in the one who was most language impared. I believe there is something to the genetically poor-detoxifier/mercury thing.

We don't vaccinate, so my kids did not get it from those. The question is - how much more severely affected would they be if we had? They are verbal and relatively high-functioning. Would they be non-verbal, hand-flapping and rocking if we had vaccinated them and exposed them to themersol?

Re: Autism, mercury and cover up???

Wow,
I am happy to see that there is a post about Autism here.
I am new to this site and have been lurking around and saw this thread.
We have a son with Autism. Joshua was DX at 2, he is now 7. We went to the DAN doc and did everything but the TTFD, DMSA, chelation. We were not comfortable with chelation and no long term studies have been done on the outcome. I go back and forth on the autism vaccine theory. Knowing what we know now, we would have delayed vaccines until Joshua was at least 2yrs of age, he got the Hep B vacc only hours after his birth. I have regreted that to this very day. We also did ABA/VB. That is what saved Joshua. If he had not received ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) VB (Verbal Behavior) we doubt he would be the kid he is now. Speech, OT, PT, and other thearpies are a must for our kids. I do think that in Nursing, all areas, we all need to be educated on the S/S of Autism and the general disorder, because we will all have pts on the Spectrum, and there is nonthing more worse than a doc, nurse, MA who doesn't have a clue, and then you take your child to that doc. Oh you just want to smack them!!!!
This month, APR, is Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 is World Autism Day.
I want to thank the person who started this post, we need to educate, educate, educate.
Thanks and God Bless,
Dee

Re: Autism, mercury and cover up???

Thanks for all of the wonderful posts and links.

One of my 3.5 yr old twins has autism. He showed traits of autism as young as 6 months. Heck to be completely honest he has his whole life. He never liked to be held or cuddled even as a small child. We started a progression of hearing tests, vision tests, any other tests they could do. Having had a niece who presented with autism after her 18 month shots, I had started from the begining spreading everything out to be on the safe side. so I honestly dont think I can blame Jake's autism on the vaccines, but I do blame them on environmental factors(the poor air quality in B'ham alabama), lead(has tested high for lead forever until recent homeopathic tx and vitamin tx) because all of the toys he gummed on are now toys that are on the lead recall list.

He now has about 10 words maybe 15, which is spectacular considering he was completely non verbal until this past January. I dont what finally flipped the switch for him, but I know the child spends more time with therapists then he does in his classroom at developmental preschool.

Once again thanks for the info. It is really good to read a wide variety of information.

There are NO scientific studies to show that immunizations have anything to do with autism. Actually quite the opposite. They are finding that is has a more genetic link than anything. Everyone is scared to give their child an MMR shot because of the fear of autism, studies have shown that in places where there is a DECREASE in MMR use, there is still an INCREASE in the diagnosis of autism. But yeah... I am quite the immunization advocate. I have given probably thousands of vaccines to children over the years I have been in nursing and I have yet to have a child come up with autism from it.
