Hello all,

I am a new PICU who will be getting off orientation at the end of March (that is coming up soon!!) I just wanted some advice from experienced RN's. My unit has told me as a new nurse, I will recieve stable pt's (usually pairs) for about 3-6 months off orientation. Then I will be taking classes for more advanced pt's. A little info on myself, I have been working in a hospital for 5 years. I have worked as a tech/Student nurse in Adult Med-Surg for 2.5 years, Adult ICU/PCU for 1 year, Adult CCCU for 6 months, and Labor,Delivery, Post-Partum/Newborn for 1 year. My experience has been varied but this is my first Peds job. Any advice would be great.

Hi Michelle, Welcome to PICU. What great experience you have, you'll get to use it all and then some. Sounds like your unit has a nice way of handling those first few post orientation months. We try to be gentle with our novices but more often than not they have to hit the ground running. I have no advice to offer except listen, learn and enjoy. Ask every question that occurs to you and ignore anyone who tries to make you feel stupid for asking, the only stupid questions I've ever heard were snide remarks in response to my requests for information. PICU can be a great place to work.
