journals and professional orgs?

Hi!
I'm a new grad (may 07) and just started my first job in the PICU. In school, staying current in practice by joining professional organizations and journals was made very important. I was wondering what organizations and journals would be reccomended. As a new grad, would it be best to join something more broad, such as ANA or my states nursing association or something more specific to peds. What about journals? thanks so much!

Re: journals and professional orgs?

I'd recommend AACN and SCCM.

AACN's membership will get you two journals: Critical Care Nurse and American Journal of Critical Care. Though most of the information is geared towards adults, there are occassionally articles on peds patients. SCCM is a multidisciplinary society that is more medically focused. Their journal, Critical Care Medicine, is excellent, though mostly focused on adults. I believe they do have a pediatric section as well.

Hope that helps.
