The hospital I work at does Pediatric PD, Hemo and CRRT. I currently work in PICU but did acute dialysis here for several years. I don't know of any specific training programs but will help with any info I can. I do know there is a annual CRRT conference in California. Preconference sessions focus on various aspects of Pediatric dialysis. I have done CRRT and Hemo on infants as small as 2-3 kg. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks for the reply. CRRT conferences I guess are a great informational avenue--any ideas looking at visiting other facilities that have a program up and running continously. I guess I want both types of learning to help me guide the others. Thanks, Kathy I

I think Kansas City may have some pediatric units. I don't know that anyone has pediatric CRRT running continously or even hemo. CRRT is limited to the ICU setting here. Right now we have 2 on CRRT but we may go for months without any children running. Same with pediatric hemo. Here the preference for pediatrics is to do PD. If PD isn't an option for some reason we will do hemo. Every effort is made for the kids to do outpt hemo in an outpt facility. The very young children will come to the hospital as an outpt and receive hemo in the PICU. PICU is the only place that we can monitor the HR adequately and the only place that has pediatric emergency equipment readily available. Once the child is old enough or big enough (seems to be about 8 yrs old) to use adult emergency equipment they go to an outpt facility. It can be difficult finding one that will accept kids though. For 5 months the acute unit (me) did outpt hemo on a baby. We started PD when he was 2 months old in the NICU and moved on to Hemo. He died suddenly when he was 9 months old but he was growing and doing well up to that point. Otherwise the longest outpt pediatric hemo we have done has been about 6 months. All done in the PICU. Is the Pediatric Nephologist asking you to provide dialysis services? Do you have a need for pediatric CRRT? Do you have the equipment yet?

Re: How do I obtain training on CRRT in pediatric

Hi-Kathy thanks for the information. We got a ped. nephrologist and we have always done manual pd--but now we have the home choice set up for babies(new born-?) so now that he has arrived I'm sure that the pediatric neprologist is now going to want to drum some business so he has work, but the problem being is that only one nurse (she thinks she is qualified ) is willing to perform the treatments. I'm not trained with specifications for pediatrics and don't think we should do this without the proper training. They hired this Dr. but what about the training for the nurses?? The ACCURA (CRRT) rep will be with us at the end of the month but I want to be with a nurse who has been there done that. So I'm not going to touch or sign any papers until I has specific compendences for pediatrics. Thanks Kathy
