Angry Chest tubes directly to wall suction

We have been asked to place our patient's chest tubes directly to wall suction, bypassing the normal water seal system. Our staff are very uncomfortable with the practice due to safety concerns. We're concerned to have patients to unregulated suction, and concerned should the suction become disconnected the patient may have air fill the pleural space.
Does anyone have any experience or feedback on this subject?
Thanks!
