Smile 27 yrs out........!?!

Your opinion would be valued! Just finished clinical RN Refresher course, and look to return to PICU after 27 yrs in medical sales career! Started as RN, finishing as RN...I guess it all comes back around! 56yrs old, high energy, what are pitfalls and or suggestions???

Re: 27 yrs out........!?!

The technological advances of even the last few years are pretty considerable. Ease into things so you're not overwhelmed. Take as much orientation as they will give you, and be proactive about your learning needs. Don't let anyone discount the things you have learned outside of nursing... they're valuable too. Do whatever you need to in order to maintain that high energy... you're going to need it. Maybe take a PALS course. And brush off your ethics sensibilities, because now we're doing some things that might not be the best thing for the child... because we can... like a liver transplant in a non-compliant kid with SEVERE hepatorenal and hepatopulmonary syndromes who is now needing HFOV, dialysis, high inotropic support and who is encephalopathic... more than two weeks later!

Re: 27 yrs out........!?!

UNBELIEVABLE !!!!! Poor child! Yes, that will be a tough one for me..the ethics issues, that is.
I do plan on a PALS course as well. I appreciate your reply. The wonderful thing about all this is that I have retired twice, and do not HAVE to work, but WANT to work. That does give me the opportunity to land in the best place, where I can be of best use to the organization, as well as enjoy my profession. Again, thanks so much!
