Always happy to hear about more former counselors becoming camp nurses! It makes a huge difference. Are you going to the same camp where you were a counselor, Jen?
Unfortunately no - I worked at a GS camp in Southern Florida when I lived there, and now I'm in NC. This one sounds like it should be fun and they are VERY organized. I've been impressed so far.

Re: Okay, who's going to camp??!

Leaving July 9th for Lake of Ozarks, MO for 1 week church camp. This is my 3rd year, my son is going as a camper. There are usually a few hundred kids, age 8-12/13 plus counselors and staff. I will be head nurse with either 1 or 2 nurses to assist me.

Re: Okay, who's going to camp??!

Leaving June 23 for 2 weeks at an all-girls summer camp in West Virginia. I'm really excited, I've never been a camp nurse, but I was a counselor at this camp when I was in college one summer. So at least I'll know my way around!

I'm mostly nervous about the homesickness thing...We don't see that in my ER!

Hope everyone has a great summer!

Re: Okay, who's going to camp??!

Love hearing your stories .. I too am interested in doing the camp nurse as well as a nurs for the cruise lines. Of course this is still a ways away for me.. not really though! Until I get my RN, but I think its a great idea and what fun esp. if you have kids to sign up to the program while you are there. Ive researched a bit and they seem to pay well and get your kids in for free... by the time I am done w my RN my daughter may be too old... 16 then .. but I may still want to do it ... have fun!!!

Re: Okay, who's going to camp??!

I leave Aug 20 to be a volunteer camp nurse for 5 days with our church camp. My 2 kids are coming with me and thankfully my husband will be there as well doing the music so he can entertain them. I did this once before about 5 years ago and I think it will be fun ~ but of course also nerve wracking. The first time it was a dream. Nothing but a fe stomach aches and scratches. I am praying for the same this year. No broken bones or emergencies!

Re: Okay, who's going to camp??!

I went, I saw, I left after 2 days. No door on my bedroom, people coming in our cabin while we were out to put a double bed in my room where the new single one was. Did I mention that my bed was all made? And that when I returned later that afternoon, my clean sheets were in a heap on the floor. My laptop case was knocked over. Still no door on my bedroom, but then
I had a bed that my sheets wouldn't fit! I met my charge nurse/boss the first night, she brought up me working nights, I said I can't work nights, it makes me ill. I told that to the camp owner/director when he hired me. Her answer, "I don't care." No one told me this camp followed certain dietary rules d/t their religion, and that the children who attended were all of that religion. So none of my favorite breakfast meat was going to be served. So I said well, I can eat toast or bagels, no toasters there, they consider them a fire hazard. Also my boss said if you are on the day shift, you can't eat breakfast in the dinning hall, wonder what I was supposed to do about that? She just said you have to eat before. Wonder where I was supposed to eat before breakfast was cooked? I could go on and on, wasn't my place to be. I packed my car on that Sunday morning while they all were at breakfast and i was outa there. I stopped at McDonalds on my way home and bought an egg mcmuffin. Now I love camp nursing, that is what I do during the school year at the environmental camp I work at. But that place...........YUCK
