Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

Glad you read this, Marybeth.

I have also heard a good rumor about Camp Cedar. Also, Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota is good. I was going to work there this summer, but had to go to work full time and can't get away. One of the founding nurses of the American Camp Nurse Association (or something like that) is the head of nursing at Concordia. They have a good orientation and have been in business a long time.

Good luck. Whichever camp you attend, let us know how it turns out!

Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

Just remember, regarding camp websites, that camps are hiring from dozens to hundreds of counselors... and sometimes only one nurse.

Don't forget to look at Girl Scout camps, too!

Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

My son goes to a great camp in Branson MO its Camp Kanakuk they have 7 camps for different age groups and one in Colorado. Kids come from all over the country and in the middle school and especially high school there are kids from all over the world. However the RNs are moms who get their tuition free. They have many moms who are RNs who sign up to do this. I am considering to do this if I am working to get off work and work when my younger daughter goes her very first year. They are Christian sports camps. If anyone is interested its Kanakuk.com

Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

Wendy,

I know that many camps are mainly looking for counselors on their websites. But if they are interested in also hiring nurses, they should have information that pertains to them. I think it is an indication of how much, or how little, they value the nurse.

You want to see what the health center is like---is it well stocked, clean, and centrally located? Do you have everything you need to work effectively? Where will you be sleeping? Will you have any days off or are you working 24/7? I don't know anyone, nurse or not, that would willingly put themselves in a 24/7 position for two weeks, a month or longer. Would you? There are a few camps out there that are a dream for a nurse to work at, but there are also many that are a nightmare. The problem is how do you tell the difference? Knowledge is power.

Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

I'm so glad to read that you didn't take that job at camp Arcadia. I know that camp Cedar is a good camp to work for. The head nurse is awesome. I would have taken a job there except for the fact that I would have had the only teenage daughter in the all boys camp. I know she would have loved that. The owners of that camp listen to the head nurse's advice, and pay the nurses well for their time.

Re: New Image Weight Loss Camps

I worked at the new image weight loss camp last year and am going back again this year. It was hard work, but my daughter absolutely loved it and it was all that bad.

I am sure there are better camps out there, but this is a good camp to try as a RN. The director and his staff are very appreciative of the nurses and that went a long way, believe me.
