I am a new RN grad and want to work in cardiac rehab, need some advice please!..

Hi everyone,
I finally graduated have passed the NCLEX. I was offered a job in cardiac telemetry, but what I REALLY want to do is work as a cardiac rehab nurse. I also have 2 year degree in physical therapy (LPTA). Should I start in telemetry or can a new grad go right into cardiac rehab with no prior nursing experience? I am so mad at myself for not asking about it in the interview, but I was afraid the nurse that interviewed me would think I wasn't interested. Help!
Thanks so much!
Kim

I have been a nurse for 30 years and have been in cardiac rehab. for the past 5 years. I would have to say to a new graduate that you need to get more experience first. It may be your chosen path, but spread your wings and explore.

You need to get the tele experience to be effective in cardiac rehab. You need to know your rhythms. Also, cardiac rehab jobs are highly prized and as a new grad you would be going up against RNs with experience. You might see if the rehab department would hire you as a PRN person. And get ACLS certified also.

I would also suggest you check out the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist certification. Most programs have and want certified personnel. This would also give you a leg up on any positions that come open.

Hope this helps.

Most specialty areas prefer not to get a new grad....but perhaps with your physical therapy experience you may be able to get into cardiac rehab. I needed a strong background in cardiac / EKG when I did that type work.Understanding the meds, relating to cardiologists, and counseling skills were important too. I suggest telemetry and ICU experience also. Good luck.
